"Many Photos" - Canadian cops hunting double murderer are slammed after accidentally using ‘cat filter’ during live-stream press conference

POLICE in Canada were slammed after they accidentally streamed a press conference about a double murder using Facebook’s cat filter.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police messed up during an announcement about the murder of US woman Chynna Deese and her Australian boyfriend Lucas Fowler.

The RCMP have apologised over the gaff

Their bodies were found about 12 miles south of Laird Hot Springs.

The couple were travelling in  a remote part of British Columbia when they were shot and killed near their blue 1986 Chevrolet van on Highway 97, the Alaska Highway, on July 15 this year.

In the original coverage on Friday Sergeant Janelle Shoihet was shown ‘wearing’ whiskers and pointy, pink ears, due to the filter.

The error was later blamed on “technical difficulties” after it had been re-recorded and the original post deleted.

The force later issued an apology, saying the cat filter was an “automatic setting”.

Many took to Twitter to slam the force.

One wrote on the social networking site: “Honestly, devastated families are watching these clowns beclown themselves; they’re reliant on them to solve the murders.”

Another said: “Someone at RCMP is missing a few brain cells.”

A third posted: “Boy, this should bring comfort to the families. What a joke.”

The RCMP said in a Twitter post: “We are aware and addressing it as it’s an automatic setting. Thank you, we will rectify and issue a video shortly.

Ms Deese, 24, and Fowler, 23, were just three days into a three week road trip across Canada visiting national parks when they were killed.

Having met in a hostel in Croatia in 2017 they had already travelled extensively in Europe, Central America and Asia.

RCMP said they do not currently have any suspects in custody and an investigation was still being carried out.

They issued an appeal to the public for more information about the shooting, particularly anyone who had any dashcam footage.

A statement from the Fowler family, issued by the New South Wales Police, said: “We have lost our dear Lucas Fowler, son, brother, grandson and friend in the most terrible of circumstances.

“To lose someone so young and vibrant, who was travelling the world and just enjoying life to the full, is devastating.

“To know his beautiful girlfriend, Chynna Deese of Charlotte, North Carolina also lost her life in this violent event is too cruel.

“All our love and best wishes go to Chynna’s family and friends.

“We are all now travelling to Canada to be with our boy and to bring him home.

“Our deepest thanks for all your love and care. At this stage we can only move forward a minute at a time, and those minutes are moving so slowly.”

Chynna’s brother British told The Washington Post: “We’re not ever going to see her again. This is a brutal murder.”

Ms Deese’s sister Kennedy paid tribute to her, saying she was her “best friend” and posted one of the final photos of her.

HIGHWAY OF TEARS

The bodies of Chynna Deese and Lucas Fowler were found close to the Alaska Highway which is known as the Highway of Tears, a 450-mile stretch of road where up to 50 women have vanished or been murdered there since 1969.

Terrified locals now believed a serial killer is on the loose – after three women died or disappeared in 2018.

The remote stretch of road was given the grisly nickname after a string of women were discovered in shallow graves or simply vanished without a trace.

Signs along the Highway 16, between Prince George and Prince Rupert, warn of a serial killer on the loose – cautioning girls not to hitchhike.

The first killing was in 1969 when the body of 26-year-old Gloria Moody was found after she failed to return home from a bar.

Six years later, Monica Igna, 15, was found in a gravel pit, and in 1988 Alberta Williams turned up dead one month after being reported missing.

In 1994, the bodies of three indigenous teenagers were found dumped by the roadside.

Just last year, three women were murdered or went missing while on the road in British Columbia.

She said: “My dearest sister this is one of your last documented moments, just radiating. You had big beautiful life plans, and they were cut short,’ she wrote.

“Instead of watching you enjoy your thriving life, I can only carry your legacy in mine, and encourage others to do the same.

“I will miss you every moment. And love you forever, best friend.”
