BORIS Johnson’s Government are ramping up No Deal Brexit plans today as his Government “assumes” it’s going to happen.
The new PM has ordered No Deal planning to be drastically stepped up as his first task in office since being elected last week.
In a dramatic shift Michael Gove, who is responsible for working on No Deal, said his Government was “working on the assumption” that Brussels won’t budge.
Ministers are “turbo charging” No Deal preparations as it’s now the most likely option, he said yesterday.
It comes just weeks after Boris said the chance of us leaving on World Trade Organisation terms are a “million to one”.
As Boris prepared to start his first full week as PM:
- He will jet to Scotland today for talks with Scots Tory boss Ruth Davidson and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon as he tries to woo them with £300m of new regional funding
- Boris and Gove will chair a new ‘war Cabinet’ with daily and twice weekly emergency meetings
- More money is being freed up to fund whatever is needed to get us ready
- The EU was warned that it wasn’t as ready as we are to leave without a deal
- Rebels admitted they might not be able to stop a No Deal Brexit
Yesterday Mr Gove highlighted the switch in stance to a No Deal in an article for the Sunday Times, as Brussels denied throwing out the hated Northern Ireland border, which Tory MPs say will keep us tied to the EU for years to come.
He said: “We still hope they will change their minds, but must operate on the assumption that they will not.
“The prime minister has been crystal clear that that means we must prepare to leave the EU without a deal on October 31.
“You can’t just reheat the dish that’s been sent back and expect that will make it more palatable.”
Talks won’t happen unless they soften their hardline approach, No10 has said.
Boris said over the weekend he doesn’t want a No Deal, but is prepared to deliver it if that’s the only way.
It comes as Boris’s most senior aide claimed he would force through Brexit “by any means necessary” at a raucous meeting of advisers at Number 10.
And the Sun on Sunday revealed plans for a multi-million pound advertising campaign to get the public and British businesses ready for it.
TV ads and leaflets are being produced to ensure every family and business is geared up to leave the EU on October 31.
Dominic Raab said this morning that Government would do “whatever it takes” to deliver Brexit by then, and Boris has repeatedly vowed to get us out no matter what.
He told Radio 4 earlier: “We want a good deal with our EU partners” but added that the EU needed to change its “stubborn” position first.
And he warned:”Brusssels is not the only game in town.
“The opportunities of Brexit involve the growth markets of the future, from Latin America to Asia.”
He will use the recess summer break to speak to EU nations but also look outside them to trading partners for the future.
UK is better prepared for No Deal than the EU are, top business group warns
BRITAIN is better prepared than the EU for a No Deal Brexit and must do more to get ready, a top business group has warned.
Brussels lags behind in No Deal prep “by some way”, the CBI said today, and British businesses will be the ones who suffer.
“The combination of the EU and UK’s different approaches creates an imbalance, where EU goods and services exports will have easier access to the UK than UK goods and services exports will to the EU,” it said in a fresh report.
In a marked change of tone, the CBI will also urge Brussels to “come to the table and commit” to measures which could mitigate the worse effects.
Deputy director general Josh Hardie said: “Failure to do so will hurt all our economies.”
The CBI has been adamant in its opposition to a No Deal and been accused of siding with Europe for much of the past three years.
But while sticking by its plea for a managed Brexit, it issued 200 recommendations to help accelerate No Deal planning for the UK, EU and companies.
And Mr Hardie said: “All parties need to raise their game.”

And yesterday chancellor Sajid Javid today announced a £1billion spending blitz to prepare for No Deal – and an emergency Brexit Budget in October.
Writing in The Sunday Telegraph, the Treasury Chief pledged to bring in “significant extra funding” to ensure businesses are “fully ready to leave” on Halloween.
