"Many Photos" - Two years (and a £25,000 shepherd’s hut) later, David Cameron finishes 'frank and personal' memoirs

David Cameron has finally finished writing his memoirs on his time in No10, ready to be ‘detonated’ during the Tory conference later this year.

After a series of delays as the former prime minister suffered from writer’s block, the tell-all book will be published at the end of September.

Mr Cameron, who had initially been due to release the story of his life in Downing Street last year, has chosen to wait until after Brexit in March to avoid disrupting negotiations.

It is now pencilled to come out around the time of the Conservative Party Conference, which will take place in Manchester between September 29 and October 2.

Mr Cameron signed an £800,000 book deal with William Collins in October 2016 after a bidding war among publishers.

When it was announced, it was claimed that it would offer ‘a frank and personal account of David Cameron’s time in power in Number 10 Downing Street’.

The publishers vowed that it would ‘address all the key issues and decisions he made as Prime Minister, including critical reforms to the economy, welfare and education, the bombing of Libya, and the Parliamentary vote on Syria’.

They added: ‘The book will cover in depth the Scottish and European referendum campaigns, as well as his work in modernising and turning around the fortunes of the Conservative Party.’

In a press release at the time, Mr Cameron said: ‘It was an immense privilege to lead the Conservative Party for more than a decade and the country for over six years as prime minister.

‘I am looking forward to having the opportunity to explain the decisions I took and why I took them. I will be frank about what worked and what didn’t.’

Mr Cameron famously bought a £25,000 shepherd’s hut to provide him with a peaceful spot in his Oxfordshire garden to write the book.

In an interview in April 2017, he said he planned to use it as a ‘book-writing room’, although he admitted he was in competition with his children for it.

Mr Cameron has attempted to keep a low profile since stepping down as prime minister in the wake of the 2016 EU referendum.

When he was spotted by television cameras walking down Whitehall in November last year, he said: ‘I’m doing some work on my book.’

In December, he told reporters that he did not regret calling the referendum.
