HUNDREDS of Barclays customers who use the app had their savings accounts “emptied” yesterday afternoon – but the bank insists that the cash is safe.
A glitch on the app meant that some savings and Isa account customers saw their balance read zero even though they knew there were funds in there.
The bank has since assured customers it was just an issue with the figure displayed and that it has not been fixed.
It insists that the funds had never actually left their accounts, even though it looked like it had.
On Wednesday, Paul Hodgson, 47, saw that his account was empty despite knowing that there should be several thousands of pounds in there, reports Telegraph Money.
He called the bank to make sure that there was no suspicious activity on his account – but they told him the cash was still there but didn’t know when it would be fixed.
Your rights when your banking goes down
IF your banking services go down, here's what you need to know:
Will your expenses be covered? If you suffer knock-on costs you should make a note of dates, keep receipts and a log of how much you’ve been left out of pocket. The bank may reimburse you.
What are the alternatives? Visit a branch or try telephone banking if you urgently need to access cash.
How to complain about your bank? Firstly, complain to Lloyds Bank. If the problem is not resolved to your satisfaction after eight weeks then you can complain to the free Financial Ombudsman Service.
Barclays promised that the glitch was corrected within a matter of hours yesterday afternoon, but Paul said his account showed zero for almost 24 hours.
But he wasn’t the only person to be affected by the error – the bank told The Sun that the number of people affected was “in the low hundreds”.
Another customer, Ian Flint, appeared to have the same problem with his account.
He Tweeted: “@BarclaysUKHelp Hello, is the online banking app having problems? It’s saying I have 0.00 on my bond account?”
But the bank’s social media team didn’t seem to be aware of the issue at the time.
A Barclays spokesperson told The Sun: “We apologise to the small number of customers who were unable to see their ISA balance in their Barclays Mobile Banking app today.
“This has been fixed and they can now see all their accounts as normal.”
