College is a perfect storm of intoxication and education. I’ll be the first to say that I took some weird stuff as an English major and nerded out in classes about vampires and Game of Thrones. Take a look at these university courses from around the country that are anything but ordinary.
UFOs in American Society– Temple University
The class analyzes reactions of American society to aliens and UFOs. There are some seriously interesting conspiracies out there.
Comedy (Major)– Humber College
Courses within the major include standup, improvisation, scriptwriting, sketch comedy, and even has a comedy bar.
Zombies in Popular Media– Columbia College in Chicago
The undead creatures from books, movies, and television are analyzed. You may even learn how to survive the impending zombie apocalypse.
Street Fighting Mathematics– Massachusetts Institute of Technology
The course teaches how to guess mathematical answers without needing an exact calculation. The comparison is made that with problem solving, like street fighting, rules don’t matter. Do whatever works and don’t just stand there.
Mail Order Brides: Understanding the Philippines– John Hopkins University
Designed to analyze the stereotyping and misconceptions about Filipino women, the course comes with a warning that it’s extremely serious.
The Unbearable Whiteness of Barbie– Occidental College
Barbie is used as a jumping off point to discuss and analyze social issues.
The Science of Superheroes– University of California, Irvine
Taught by a professor of physics, the course examines the powers of superheroes and examine which, if any, are scientifically valid.
Elvish (Lord of the Rings)– University of Wisconsin
The complete language from the ‘Lord of the Rings’ universe can be taken as a language course.
Getting Dressed– Princeton University
The freshman seminar looks at clothing as a ‘social force’ and examines how what we wear shapes parts of who we are.
Golf Course Management (Major)– Tarleton State University
There’s actually a few universities that offer this as a major. The courses prepare students for positions in the golf industry.
The Strategy of StarCraft– University of California, Berkeley
Students learn strategies of the online game, an understanding of the world of eSports, and how improving StarCraft skills is transferrable to the world of business.
Topics in Comparative Media: American Pro Wrestling– Massachusetts Institute of Technology
The course explores the history of wrestling and its relationship with the media.
