TOM BRADY cemented his status as the NFL’s greatest ever player with a sixth Super Bowl victory – thanks to a lot of help from his defence.
The 41-year-old marshalled the only touchdown drive in the fourth quarter at Atlanta’s Mercedes Benz Stadium in the lowest scoring Super Bowl ever.
Brady hit four perfect passes when the Patriots needed them most before Sony Michel ran in the game-winning touchdown to end a defensive battle.
It delivered a sixth Super Bowl ring for Brady and his legendary head coach Bill Belichick during their 17-year domination of the NFL.
This victory will be one of their sweetest ever having been written off after an indifferent regular-season where they misfired on offence and looked leaky on defence.
New England limped through to the play-offs with an 11-5 record, their worst in a decade, but turned on the style in the post-season when it mattered.
Such were the Patriots’ struggles that some even suggested the Los Angeles Chargers were favourites when they visited Gillette Stadium in January.
But Brady and Co swatted aside a team that were billed as younger, fresher and more explosive and marched to an eighth straight AFC Championship Game.
They travelled to Arrowhead Stadium to take on the No 1 seed Kansas City Chiefs with their young quarterback sensation Patrick Mahomes and their high-powered offence.

New England prevailed as underdogs in a hostile environment to reach the Super Bowl for a third straight year.
Brady used criticism of him and his team as a chip on his shoulder to get back to the big stage, saying in television interviews: “I know everyone thinks we suck”.
Nobody was expecting this type of Super Bowl against the Rams – beating the record for the previous lowest scoring when Miami got the better of Washington 14-7 in 1973.
Brady finished with just 262 yards, no touchdowns, an interception and a fumble.
His main target Julian Edelman was on hand time and time again – finishing with 10 catches for 141 yards and winning the Super Bowl MVP award.
And on the Michel touchdown drive – Brady connected with his trusted tight end Rob Gronkowski twice.
But this time Brady leant on his defence, who shut down a Rams offence that looked explosive and unstoppable earlier in the season.
The Rams’ much-vaunted running back duo of Todd Gurley and CJ Anderson were bottled up to just 57 yards.
Such was the Patriots’ defensive masterclass that Los Angeles punter Johnny Hekker was a front runner for MVP, coming on to punt nine times in the game.
And with Jared Goff and Co in desperation mode, Stephen Gilmore made the interception that sealed another success for New England.
Their dynasty remained unbroken in Atlanta on Sunday night despite America being ready to move on and write them off.
America’s worst nightmare is that Brady is targeting another four years at the top before he eventually retires.
