"Many Photos" - Fox host Pete Hegseth reveals he hasn’t washed his hands in 10 years ‘because germs are not real’

A US TV host confessed on air that he had not washed his hands in 10 years – because “germs are not a real thing”.

Fox News presenter Pete Hegseth said bacteria did not exist because they can’t be seen with the naked eye.

Speaking on Fox And Friends, the Harvard and Princeton graduate added: “I inoculate myself.

“Germs are not a real thing. I can’t see them; therefore, they’re not real.”

His bizarre statement came after co-hosts Ed Henry and Jedediah Bila mocked him for eating leftover pizza.

Hegseth added: “My 2019 resolution is to say things on air that I say off air.”

JOKE ON CLEAN-FREAKS

He later claimed that his comments were intended as a joke – and that he believes people are too fussy over cleanliness.

Hegseth told USA Today: “We live in a society where people walk around with bottles of Purell (a brand of hand sanitiser) in their pockets, and they sanitise 19,000 times a day as if that’s going to save their life.

“I take care of myself and all that, but I don’t obsess over everything all the time.”

His comments were met with both concern and support on social media.

One viewer wrote: “I wonder if @PeteHegseth would be cool with restaurant workers preparing his food after deliberately not washing their hands?”

But another said: “I’m with you on hand washing. I’m almost 70 and haven’t had a cold or flu in years.

“Our bodies need some germs to learn how to fight them. Too many germofobes out there.”

‘OVERREACTION’

Hegseth said that the Twitter storm over his comments showed how quickly social media can overreact.

He added: “It’s ridiculous to me because of how people take literal and serious certain things and their heads explode. It’s ridiculous.”

The US-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says washing hands is among the most effective ways to avoid getting sick and spreading germs.

US President Donald Trump has regularly been open about his fear of germs.

In his 1997 book, The Art of the Comeback, Mr Trump wrote: “One of the curses of American society is the simple act of shaking hands, and the more successful and famous one becomes the worse this terrible custom seems to get.

“I happen to be a clean hands freak.

“I feel much better after I thoroughly wash my hands, which I do as much as possible.”
