New photo BBC extending steamy drama Bodyguard’s finale by 15 minutes to give a sensational finale

CREATORS of steamy hit thriller Bodyguard are to give us an extra helping of the TV phenomenon.

The BBC has revealed it will extend the concluding episode by 15 minutes, to make sure the high-octane drama delivers a suitably sensational finale.

It means the corporation now has to rearrange the Sunday night schedules to accommodate the expanded show.

That includes moving the Ten O’Clock News from its usual starting time.

A TV insider said: “Giving an episode of any drama series more than a 60-minute slot is a rare event on the BBC, so this proves just how much they value Bodyguard.

“Viewers are unlikely to complain, given that the audience response tends to be that they’ve usually been left wanting more every time.

“This should ensure that Bodyguard’s climax is unforgettable, particularly as the tension has been continually rising over the last three episodes.”

In Sunday’s episode we saw Home Secretary Julia Montague, played by Keeley Hawes, nearly killed when a bomb exploded as she gave a speech to a packed hall.

That was despite the best efforts of her bodyguard Sergeant David Budd, played by Richard Madden, who raced to protect her from the blast.

The explosion came just a week after Julia had been the target of a bloody assassination attempt as she travelled in her ministerial car.

All the action, combined with several sex scenes between Julia and David, has helped the six-parter attract seven million viewers since it debuted last month.

That has made the Bodyguard the most successful drama of 2018 so far, and one of the Beeb’s biggest hits in years.

With so much to live up to, delivering a super-sized finale is a very smart move.

This week she refused to confirm or deny a relationship, when in conversation with with Capital FM’s Roman Kemp, Vick Hope and Sonny Jay.

Take note Jack – if she’s in two minds, a can of Sure should seal the deal.

Review of Press

'Tabloids deserve a fairer press' - Bizarre TV’s ROD MCPHEE checks out Press, the new BBC1 drama

IN a world before the web and fake news, a drama about journalism could have been a brilliant way to show the importance of a hard-hitting and decent newspaper industry.

Instead with Press the BBC have produced what may be an entertaining drama at times, but fundamentally fails to capture the beating heart of a business packed with personality and pride in pursuit of quick digs.

Impressive attention to detail in the sets, a stellar cast including Ben Chaplin and David Suchet, and a glossy production make for a visually beautiful show – with lots of scope to develop some of the more interesting characters further in coming episodes.

But it’s hard to see past the bucketloads of poetic licence employed to create heroes and villains in a plotline, which is so far fairly thin. Likeable Ben Chaplin stands out as the star figure in his role as Duncan Allen, editor of tabloid The Post, with a gift for capturing the public imagination and a deep passion for compelling storytelling.

But dirty tricks and underhand tactics including scenes which show a young reporter ordered to “out” a recently deceased man to his grieving family are so far removed from the reality of journalistic practice that the show becomes misleading fantasy.

Were this a medical or a legal drama, far more attention would have been paid to presenting a true picture of life behind the scenes of industries which touch all of our lives.

Journalism deserved the same treatment.

Acclaimed writer Mike Bartlett, the brains behind the Beeb’s Doctor Foster, undoubtedly has a gift for storytelling and a string of hits to his name.

But Press has work to do in order to live up to his previous triumphs

Baker’s  blunt tactics

MOST people who are catapulted into the limelight either cower from the inevitable online abuse that follows or selectively lock horns with the trolls.

But not Great British Bake Off contestant Dan Beasley-Harling.

He has decided to stand up to virtually everyone who has attacked him on Twitter since the Channel 4 show launched last week.

And Dan – who earned a Paul Hollywood handshake on Tuesday – is either killing them with kindness or using sarcastic James Blunt-esque comebacks.

One Twitter user said they hated him with a passion, and he replied: “One tweet into our relationship and I’m not crazy about you either, dear!”

Another said Dan was “annoying the f***” out of her, to which he said: “Sorry love, tell me how I can change myself to make you happier.”

Some were even nastier, with one slamming the gay dad’s choice of names for his two children, writing: “Someone take these kids away from him.”

But Dan retorted: “Gosh! What a vicious thing to say! Hope you enjoy the show anyway!”

Seeing as bungling judge Prue Leith tweeted the name of last year’s winner a day too early, perhaps Dan could give her advice on how to use Twitter.

DANCING On Ice supremo Dan Whiston has certainly earned his stripes – appearing in every series and winning three times.

And it seems ITV bosses have noticed as they have promoted the champion skater to Creative Director and Choreographer.

Dan will now take control of the routines and coach the celebrities. He said: “I’ve won the show three times, which makes now the perfect time to take the step up to this new role – and I can’t wait to get going.”
