ANIMAL rights campaigners have called for Celebrity Island to be AXED over the “grotesque” death of Colin the pig.
Activists at Humane Society International UK have urged Channel 4 bosses to pull the plug after the distressing scenes in tonight’s show.
The animal was taken in from the wild by celebrity campmates after animal lover Towie star Pete Wicks, 29, insisted they should not kill it.
The poor piggie was tied to a tree after it began causing mischief in camp, and managed to choke itself to death during a struggle.
Pete was inconsolable and viewers were disgusted, with many voicing their outrage about Colin’s death on Twitter tonight.
Now bosses at the Humane Society have told Channel 4 the show needs to go.
A statement from the group states: “It’s time for Channel 4 to pull the plug on programmes like Celebrity Island because it really is grotesque for animals to be made to suffer and die for a TV show.
“Colin the pig was most likely placed on the island to be killed for food, a fate that he escaped thanks to Pete Wicks’ intervention, but nonetheless Colin tragically ended up dying by strangulation anyway in circumstances that seem highly dubious and certainly would have been painful and frightening for Colin.

“Whether it’s a pig or a stingray, no animal should lose its life so that a group of celebrities can play survival games.
“We need new higher ethical standards of animal respect and protection in broadcasting, and that begins with consigning Bear Grylls’ Island to the history books.”
Other stars to take part in this year’s show include singer Martin Kemp, 56, Olympic rower James Cracknell, 46, and Jo Wood, 63.
The show has been accused of cruelty to animals previously after Made In Chelsea star Ollie Locke, 30, brutally stabbed a crocodile to death.
