SPEED limits on motorways should be hiked to 80mph to boost Britain’s productivity, a cabinet minister has suggested.
Liz Truss told a fringe event this evening that ministers should “look again” at moves to stop gridlock on the country’s roads.
The Chief Secretary to the Treasury told a Centre for Policy Studies event on how to spend within our means: “I’d like us to look again at things like our speed limits on the motorway.
“We have often toyed with the idea of raising it to 80mph, why don’t we look at that again?”
She claimed it would lead to “productivity improvements” because drivers would be able to get to meetings more quickly.
And that they would be “wasting less of their lives” on the road.
Highways England called for the speed limit to be hiked earlier this month – but said that the public wouldn’t support it.
It also has considered the idea of scrapping speed limits on Sundays altogether to try and ease congestion on Britain’s busy roads.
At the same event she said she was a “regular shopper” at chain clothes store Primark – and she’s fully behind its ethos of offering customers great value for money.
She also revealed she would “love to see tax cuts” to help the economy grow.
Brexit would be a great opportunity to “shake up the way we do things” and “make Britain fit for the 22nd century”, she added.
She hinted that ministers would cut “legacy policies that aren’t working” but refused to “spend willy nilly” and take eyes off the pile of public debt that remains.

Hitting back at Jeremy Corbyn’s populist policies to raise taxes and go on a public spending binge, Ms Truss told Tory party activists that there was “shallow support” for his ideas.
“Jeremy Corbyn doesn’t believe in freedom,” she said. “He believes in control.”
Tories need to be fair but also free, she stressed – and the party should make sure normal people have the economic freedom to control their own cash as much as possible.
