DOLLY Parton has confessed that her husband Carl Dean doesn’t listen to her music – despite the pair being married for almost 53 years.
The 73-year-old star also revealed that Carl, 76, rarely attends her concerts, quipping that this could be the secret to their happy marriage.
The singer was speaking on Good Morning Britain earlier today following the West End launch of 9 to 5 the Musical last night.
Host Richard Madeley asked Dolly if it was true that Carl had only seen her perform live once, to which the icon replied: “He’s seen me a time or two more than that.
“For years and years he would never come to the shows because he felt he’d get too nervous if I messed up, so he just never wanted to watch.
“The first time he saw me perform and saw I was in control of the stage he was okay and he will come to another show or two – usually if I’m playing at state fairs.”
However, it’s not just nerves that stop Carl from attending the gigs – with Dolly going on to admit that he doesn’t even play her songs.
She continued: “He’s not necessarily one of the biggest fans of my music.
“He likes hard rock, he likes Led Zeppelin and Bluegrass music so my music is somewhere inbetween.
“He doesn’t dislike it but he doesn’t go out of his way to play my records, put it that way.”
When asked if that had affected their romance, Dolly added: “He’s proud of me and he loves that I love what I do but… It’s a touchy subject.
“I’m like his little girl and he worries about that.”
She then agreed with the hosts that this could be the key to their long-lasting marriage, continuing: “We respect each other and laugh a lot, that’s the healthiest part.”
Dolly met Carl when she was washing her clothes at a laundromat at 18 years old, with the pair getting married in 1966 – two years later.
The pair got married in secret so that the press didn’t report on the low-key ceremony, with Carl famously opting to stay out of the limelight throughout Dolly’s glittering showbiz career.
After accompanying his celebrity wife to a glitzy event Carl is reported to have told her: “Dolly, I want you to have everything you want, and I’m happy for you, but don’t you ever ask me to go to another one of them dang things again!”
Dolly previously told Taste of Country: “I think that has been the best formula for us, the fact that we appreciate each other when we are together.
