"Many Photos" - Cyber criminals targeting phones and email accounts of MPs with messaging app scam

Cyber criminals have tried to hack into the accounts of MPs, it emerged last night.

Crooks have sent out a phishing email asking politicians to provide overseas contact details or download a secure messaging app.

Cyber criminals have been targeting MPs and trying to hack their phones and email accounts[/caption]

But the hackers are using the scam email to gain access to the person’s contacts list and send messages out in their name.

Tory deputy chief whip Chris Pincher has sent an email to MPs warning them to ignore the messages.

At least one politician – Tory MP Mike Freer – fell victim to the scam.

In a message posted on Facebook, he wrote: “If anyone received a text asking for them to download a viber so we can have a secure call, please ignore and delete.

“I’ve been hacked.”

A Tory source confirmed the hacking attack and said they believed only one MP had so far been caught out.

Parliamentary Digital Services, which advises politicians and their staff on internet protection, is investigating the incident.

British MPs have been targeted by cyber hackers before.

In June 2017 up to 90 parliamentary accounts were feared to have been affected in an attack.

While it is not yet clear who is behind the latest phishing email, there are growing concerns that state sponsored hackers from countries like Russia and China are increasingly targeting the UK.

Only Tory MP Mike Freer is thought to have fallen victim to the scam
