"Many Photos" - British Airways stopped cleaning inside planes between flights during secret trial to test quicker turnaround times

BRITISH Airways temporarily stopped cleaning its planes on selected flights last week.

A spokesperson has confirmed with Sun Online Travel that the measure was part of a trial to see if the airline can cut turnaround times.

The airline ran the trial for four days from January 29 to February 2 to see if it could speed up departure times during particularly disruptive times.

During the trial, the flight from London Heathrow to Dublin was only fully cleaned at Heathrow Airport before the trip.

When it arrived in Dublin, a cleaning crew were brought on board to clear rubbish but not to clean the plane as usual.

The aircraft was then checked by a senior manager, a spokesperson told Sun Online Travel, before taking off and landing back at London Heathrow, where it was cleaned fully upon landing.

According to Paddle Your Own Kanoo, a leaked memo from British Airways cabin crew to trade union Unite said: “It has been brought to our attention that British Airways have begun a trial whereby there will be no cleaning completed in the cabin during turnarounds.”

Passengers on the flight at the time were made aware of the change in cleaning procedures.

Twitter user The Flying Suit tweeted: “@alex_cruz authorises ‘no cleaning of aircraft operating to and from Dublin from today.’

“Cabin crew are unauthorised to do cleaning under CAA rules, so this will present a massive security risk – in order to save money. BA at it again?”

Another wrote: “[Alex Cruz] has now stopped cleaning his aircraft on turnarounds from today. Dublin being the first destination to have aircraft NOT CLEANED! Security risk!”

Paddle Your Own Kanoo also reported that Unite told flight crew to not clean the plane “under any circumstances,” such as seat pocket cleaning and seat belt crossing.

A British Airways spokesperson told Sun Online Travel: “We know our cabin crew work extremely hard looking after our customers and understand their rest period between flights is very important.

“We consulted with our crews during this short trial to advise them not to carry out additional tasks during their down time between flights.

“We understand our customers value arriving at their destinations on time, that’s why we completed a short trial on one route.”

It is unclear if any further trials will be put forward.

Sun Online Travel previously revealed some of the dirties surfaces on a plane.

While you might think it’s the tray table, the head rest is actually one of the worst culprits.

Of the hazards found on planes, scientists found everything from bacteria and E coli to yeast and mould on surfaces such as the seat belt, tray table and seat pockets.

Sun Online Travel has contacted Unite for additional comment.
