"Many Photos" - Apple Watch saved my dad, 67, after fall left him ‘bloody and unconscious’ – by AUTOMATICALLY calling emergency services

AN APPLE Watch owner has credited the gadget with “saving his life” – after it alerted emergency services following a serious fall.

Toralv Østvang, 67, was found “bloody and unconscious” by the police, who had picked up on an automatic alert sent from pensioner’s Apple timepiece.

It’s all thanks to Fall Detection, an ingenious feature on the new Apple Watch Series 4.

It detects automatically when you’ve fallen hard and been unresponsive for a minute, and can issue a life-saving emergency alert.

Norwegian Toralv is believed to have fallen during a trip to the bathroom in the night, but fainted and fell to the floor.

The serious fall left Toralv with three fractures in his face – but his Apple Watch meant that help was at hand.

Kirsti, Toralv’s daughter, told NRK:  “It could have gone so much worse.

“All morning we asked: ‘What had happened if he hadn’t worn a smartwatch?’ He didn’t bring his mobile phone in the bathroom.

“It’s amazing that he got such quick help from the alarm, until the police found him.

“It was a serious fall – perhaps it saved his life.”

According to Kirsti, Toralv had never considered having another alert system, and just happened to be wearing an Apple Watch.

Automatic fall detection will alert emergency services if you have a hard fall and can’t get up

The Fall Detection feature launched late last year, with the new Apple Watch Series 4.

Apple captured 250,000 days worth of data from 2,500 people to build up a profile of what falling looks like.

Using this data, your Apple Watch can use the built-in accelerometer and gyroscope to detect when you’ve tripped over, and will create a pop-up on your watch.

You’ll be able to use this pop-up to initiate a call to the emergency services, or dismiss it completely.

If the Apple Watch detects that you’ve remained motionless for a whole minute, it’ll place an emergency call automatically – and a message with your location gets sent straight to your phone’s emergency contacts.

This feature is turned off by default, unless you’re over the age of 65.

How to turn Apple Watch fall detection on

Here's what you need to do...

  • Make sure you own an Apple Watch Series 4

  • Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone

  • Tap into the My Watch tab

  • Tap on Emergency SOS

  • Turn Fall Detection on by pressing the toggle

  • If you’ve entered your age as older than 65 during Apple Watch or Health app setup, Fall Detection is turned on automatically

  • Remember that the Apple Watch might not detect all falls, and sometimes high levels of activity can trigger the alert

The Apple Watch is also capable of taking an electrocardiogram (ECG), spotting deadly heart rhythm problems.

And experts believe the Apple Watch can also detect diabetes with 85% accuracy.
