"Many Photos" - Brexit latest: Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn ‘unite to demand EU bend on Irish backstop’

THERESA May and Jeremy Corbyn have both agreed that the EU MUST bend on the Brexit backstop if the deal is ever going to get signed off by MPs.

The Prime Minister said today she will go back to Brussels to demand more changes to the Northern Ireland agreement to “deliver the Brexit the British people voted for”.

In a fresh call for national unity, she urged MPs on all sides of the debate to bury their differences and help deliver the best possible Brexit.

And in words that appeared to show a united front with the Labour boss, she said that even he agreed that the EU needed to budge.

She wrote in the Sunday Telegraph: “Although Jeremy Corbyn didn’t vote with us, he also believes the potential indefinite nature of the backstop is an issue that needs to be addressed with Brussels.

“That is exactly what I’m doing.”

And in a message to other Labour MPs to come out and back her, she added: “It’s up to all of us at Westminster to make it work.”

Earlier this week the Labour boss spoke with the PM in a 45-minute meeting to work out a way forward on Brexit,

He later told the BBC he discussed “various issues surrounding the problems of the backstop” with the PM herself.

“I have a problem where we go into an agreement which is one sided, I want an agreement which is mutual,” he said.

The unity piles pressure on the EU to make changes to the hated backstop, which would see us enter an agreement with the EU if no trade deal is secured.

It would force the UK to play by EU rules to make sure there’s no hard border in Ireland, but could go on forever and Britain can’t exit it without permission from the bloc.

The EU are planning to hold their line until the end of March – and have shown no signs of budging on the backstop, saying it can’t be changed.

Brexiteers warn 'trouble ahead' if PM rips up promises on hated backstop

BREXITEERS today warned Theresa May that there would be “trouble ahead” if she went back on her promises to change the hated Northern Ireland backstop.

Leading members of the Eurosceptic ERG group came out to slam the PM for appearing to go back on her word already.

MPs voted in favour of a motion which would force the PM back to Brussels to get “alternative arrangements” to replace the backstop.

In an article for the Sunday Telegraph the PM said she is looking at those.

But she also said Sir Graham Brady said he “would be happy with the current backstop if there was a time limit or unilateral exit mechanism”.

Immediately furious MPs accused her of breaking her promises to them.

Steve Baker warned that there would be “trouble ahead” and there were “grave misgivings about the whole agreement”.

He added: “If all we see is a codicil – a ‘joint interpretive instrument’ – expect a further substantial defeat for the agreement.”

The right way forward was the so-called Malthouse compromise agreement drawn up between Tory Brexiteers and Remainers last week, he stressed.

And Andrea Leadsom added: “We said we would support the amendment to send a message to the EU re the backstop.

“We all said there are other issues with the withdrawal agreement. Britain deserves a better deal.”

The PM also used her article to send a defiant message to Brexit-wreckers – there will be NO second referendum.

She said any hope of delaying Britain’s EU departure were dealt a knock-out blow in last week’s Commons vote – and Remoaners should now throw in the towel.

Mrs May made clear she has no time for those who think the verdict passed by the British people in 2016 should be overturned “before it is even implemented.”

She declared: “The leaders of the campaign for a second referendum had the chance to put their plan before the House of Commons a few days ago.

“But they recognised there is no majority in this Parliament to hold another vote. Indeed, I believe there never will be.”

Jeremy Corbyn finally agreed to talks about Brexit this week – where he raised the issue of the backstop

Brexit rebels ditched plans to force a vote on a second referendum last week after it became clear they couldn’t summon the support.

And a string of motions which would have delayed Brexit and could have increased demands for another vote flopped.
