New photo Camera captures animals using a fallen tree trunk as a bridge over the water at French lake

A menagerie of animals great and small have been caught on camera using a fallen tree trunk as their very own bridge over a lake.

Mesmerising footage shows pole cats, wild boar, foxes and even snakes taking the high road over le lac du Der in Champagne, France, to keep their paws, claws and scales dry. 

Wildlife artist Jean Chevallier, 57, set up the camera at the beauty spot throughout 2018 near his home in the Champagne region of France so that he could observe the creatures.

The heart-warming footage, which bears a startling similarity to the Nintendo video game which sees human and animal characters living in a fictional village, has already gone viral and racked up an incredible 4.4million views. 

The clips show all manner of critters from tiny field mice, woodpeckers, voles and frogs through to ducks, domestic cats, raccoons and even a snake ambling or scuttling along the natural walkway. 

Not only do delighted viewers get to see the animals crossing the water but also enjoy the relaxing sound of birds tweeting in the background and spot fish leaping in the background. 

Mr Chevallier said: 'I wanted to set up the camera because I love wildlife and I'm very passionate about exploring the local species of animals and wanted to capture the most interesting animals around my home.

'I've been passionate [about wildlife] since childhood, just like many naturalists. 

'I don't know when I started, but it was before I was seven. There are still many thing to learn about nature.

'Camera-traps can be really useful to [learn about] mammals without any real trapping. 

'It's very exciting to be with the computer outside checking the footage and getting a glimpse of the first seconds.

'When you see an animal in the video you get the impression you really saw it, and you look on the trunk to check in case he or she comes again. 

'Bridges are usually a good location and this is a quite area nice background with good possibilities to hang and to hide the cameras. 

'It's always nice to see wild cats, especially when they're hunting.' 

The animals seen in the footage include: cat, wild cat, coypu, robin, thrush, russet vole, polecat, frog, mallard, grass snake, fox, weasel, marten, fox, woodpecker, coot, heron, carp, turtle dove, squirrel, kingfisher, jay, wild boar, field mouse, vole, shrew, raccoon and badger.
