CHOOSING a baby name is never going to be an easy task.
But as one expectant mum recently learnt, working out your little one’s initials can be even more tricky.
The woman explained on Mumsnet that she and her partner had almost decided on a first and middle name – until they paired them with their surname.
At this point, they realised their baby’s potential initials read ‘G.I.T.’.
The mum asked if others thought this was acceptable, writing: “We have 99% decided on a name. The initials will be G.I.T., is that an issue?
“Considering throwing in a second middle name that I love to change it to G.F.I.T. Or does it not matter?”
Unsurprisingly, the post caused quite a stir.
Most advised against using the names, with one person commenting: “Honestly don’t do it, your child will be ribbed mercilessly at school and will forever be called ‘git’.”
Another wrote: “Secondary schools often have the children’s initials on their PE kit. Please don’t inflict these initials on your child, they will be a source of ridicule!”
Some didn’t seem too fussed by the suggestion – although they still acknowledged that it may raise some eyebrows.
One said: “I’m going against the majority here and saying I don’t think it matters that much… following marriage I’ve ended up with the initials CJD, used daily at work but after the initial snigger and eye roll from me it doesn’t really come up very often.”
Another message read: “I don’t think G.I.T. is that bad to be fair. Do people with middle names use their full initials? I don’t have one so I wasn’t sure.
“If it bothers you then I’d either leave the middle name out or add the other one you like.”
The woman seemed to take the comments on board, later revealing that she’d probably add a second middle name.
She posted: “Will likely add the F name, it was actually the planned middle name but we changed our minds to the I one, will just use both to avoid any issues.”
We think her son or daughter may thank her in a few years.
