New photo Discarded Christmas trees await the binmen as they lie forgotten on the streets of west London

As the festive period draws to a close and thousands of people headed back to work with January blues, the streets of London resembled a graveyard as they became littered with discarded Christmas trees this week.

And despite New Year's Eve being only a few days ago, the seasonal buzz appears to have died down with many people deciding to throw away their tree as 2019 begins.

Commuters on their way to work today could be seen rushing by the old and forgotten trees which now serve as the only reminder of the busy festive period.

Christmas trees could be seen lining the pavements and roads, ditched by houses, dumped with rubbish bags and onewas even floating in a pond.

And some trees - once decorated with colourful lights and tinsel - looked worse for wear after a month of being on display.

The UK ditches an average of seven million Christmas trees per year which end up in landfill. However more places across the country are offering to recycle old and forgotten trees to be more environmentally friendly.
