"Many Photos" - The Sopranos will be made into a movie – with James Gandolfini’s SON playing Tony

THE Sopranos will be turned into a movie with James Gandolfini’s son playing leading man Tony.

Michael Gandolfini, 19, will depict the mobster in his youth, as the film is a prequel to the cult TV series.

The movie – called The Many Saints of Newark – is set in 1967 and follows the race riots between Italians and African-Americans in the New Jersey state.

Sopranos creator David Chase has penned the film, which is currently in pre-production.

Confirming his new role in a statement, Michael enthused: “It’s a profound honour to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano.

“I’m thrilled that I am going to have the opportunity to work with David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled for The Many Saints of Newark.

James left the world in mourning when he died of a heart attack in 2013 aged 51.

He found fame with his portrait of Tony Soprano, a violent mobster who seeks help from a therapist after suffering panic attacks induced by his struggle balancing family and work life.

The actor received critical acclaim for the role, which aired from 1999 to 2007.

His efforts earned him three Emmy awards and a Golden Globe.

The Many Saints of Newark will focus on Dickie Moltisanti, the father of series regular Christopher Molsanti, as he mentors Tony.

Very Farmiga, Alessandro Nivola and Jon Berthnal also star.

The movie – helmed by Alan Taylor, who directed many of the original episodes – is yet to be given a release date.
