New photo Would you try the ‘sausage roll diet’? How eating only Greggs food helped one bloke lose TWO STONE in six weeks

AMONG the hundreds of diet plans on offer the Greggs diet would seem to be one of the most unlikely but it seems only eating food from the high street bakery can help you lose weight.

A new TV show reveals how eating food such as the chain’s famous sausage rolls can help you shed the pounds.

The Channel 4 programme How to Lose Weight Well, followed David Hulston, 46, as he managed to lose 2st in six weeks after he ate nothing but food sold by Greggs.

The choreographer from London wanted to get trim for a friend’s wedding.

He and five other recruits took up the challenge set by presenters Dr Xand van Tulleken and GP Dr Helen Lawal to stick to different diets in a bid to lose the pounds.

David had to eat no more than 1,800 calories a day for six weeks by having food only from the shop’s Minimise Me menu.

His diet often consisted of an egg roll for breakfast, a sausage roll for lunch and coconut, lime and chili chicken salad for dinner along with snacks such as a banana and a fruit medley pot between meals.

Other choices included a red berry porridge for breakfast, one slice of margherita pizza for lunch and a ham salad sub roll for dinner.

No alcohol was allowed.

Over the six weeks David’s weight dropped from 17st to 15st and his waistline shrank.

David said: “‘I’m over the moon. I did feel hungry but I’m glad I stuck to it. I’m fast approaching 50 and want to feel fit by the time I do.

“But when I started I was the heaviest I’ve ever been – and I love Greggs pasties. If you think you have the willpower, then go for it.”

Dr van Tulleken said: “There’s always something we want to slim down for – whether it’s a wedding or a holiday. But how do we know which diet will work for us? In this series, we test the latest diets.”

The potato diet, also featured on the show, was also a surprise success.

It involved eating nothing but up to 5lb of potatoes a day – either boiled, mashed or baked for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The dieter was only allowed a few drops of olive oil and chopped herbs for flavour.

While advocates say it can help lose as much as 10lb in a week the diet also comes with a warning as it is low in protein which reduces energy levels.

The volunteer on the show who used the diet dropped 12lbs in just seven days, falling from 12st 4lb to 11st 6lb.

Dr van Tulleken warned: “Crash-dieting is frowned upon by many health professionals for being unbalanced. It can be also be dangerous and might not offer long-lasting results.”
