When is the Upstart Crow Christmas Special on BBC Two?
The Upstart Crow Christmas Special will air on BBC2 on Christmas Day, Tuesday December 25 at 8:35 pm.
The special will be slightly longer than a regular episode at 40 minutes instead of the usual 30, following on from the success of 2017’s festive special.
An Upstart Crow is a snippet from a quote, which reads: “An upstart Crow, beautified with our feathers.”
The words form part of a critique by Shakespeare’s rival, Robert Greene, in his work Groats-Worth Of Wit.
Who’s starring in the Upstart Crow Christmas Special with David Mitchell?
Peep Show comedian David Mitchell again takes the lead with sharp quips and historical puns as William Shakespeare himself, while actress Liza Tarbuck plays his wife Anne Hathaway.
The two will once again be joined by stand-up Harry Enfield, who plays Shakespeare’s father and Friday Night Dinner star Mark Heap as rival Robert Greene.
Sir Kenneth Branagh is following in the footsteps of his ex-wife Emma Thompson after she played Elizabeth I in last year’s festive episode by debuting as a “mysterious stranger.”
Supermodel turned actress Lily Cole will join the cast in an unknown role alongside Karl Theobald as Greene’s servant Job Scratchit.

What’s the Upstart Crow Christmas Special about?
Upstart Crow is a comedy about William Shakespeare as he begins to make a name for himself in London while trying to balance family life in Stratford-upon-Avon.
The BBC festive special will take inspiration from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, instead of being based on a Shakespeare play like most regular episodes.
A mysterious stranger (Branagh) inspires Will (Mitchell) to get Greene (Heap) to mend his evil ways with the help of three Christmas spirits.
