JAPAN has announced it is leaving the International Whaling Commission to resume commercial hunts for the animals for the first time in 30 years.
Here is what know about the once thriving industry which is widely viewed as cruel.
What is whaling?
Whaling is the hunting of whales expressly for usable products like meat, oil and blubber.
It has been going on for thousands of years but was first documented in the ninth century.
But after centuries of whale-hunting the population is now dangerously low.
Is whale hunting legal?
In 1986, in response to a plummeting populations and widespread anger, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) issued a global moratorium, banning commercial whaling.
But Iceland and Norway lodged official objections to the moratorium and have continued a commercial hunt
Norway only respected the IWC’s whaling ban until 1993 after which it exploited a loophole in the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling and resumed hunting for minke whales
Like Japan, Iceland initially conducted a ‘scientific’ whaling programme. Then, in 1992, it withdrew from the IWC. When Iceland re-joined in 2004, it included a clause in its re-entry that spoke out in objection to the whaling moratorium.
In 2006, Iceland resumed commercial whaling, targeting fin and minke whales.
In 2010 alone, the country’s whalers killed 148 endangered fin whales.

Has Japan resumed commercial whaling?
The country’s government announced on December 26 2018 it was leaving the IWC to resume commercial hunts for the animals for the first time in 30 years.
But it said it would no longer go to the Antarctic for its much-criticized annual killings.
Japan switched to what it calls research whaling after the IWC imposed the moratorium and now says stocks have recovered enough to resume commercial hunts.
