New photo UK weather forecast – ‘Intense’ rain and storms to soak Britain with 34 flood alerts issued as Christmas getaways get a drenching

INTENSE downpours are set to give Britain a drenching today – with 34 flood alerts issued across the country as 2.8million extra cars hit the roads for Christmas.

Families seeking to make their Christmas getaway this week are likely to be hit by travel chaos as dreadful weather conditions look set to cause havoc on the roads and rail network.

It is a rainy picture across Britain today as heavy rainfall sweeps in from the Atlantic

The Met Office says heavy, blustery and perhaps thundery showers will pound Britain today.

And alerts for flooding have been issued today for south Wales and the South West of England as the downpours begin.

Warnings for Herefordshire, Devon and Yorkshire have also been issued.

Met Office forecaster Richard Miles told The Sun Online said: “Some heavy rain and quite strong winds will come in from the South West, most of the South and central parts of the UK, and that’ll move across again.

The South and South West will bear the brunt of the wet weather today

“Behind that then it will be clearer and colder – you might get a bit of frost in the far East of the country and Scotland.

“Then you’ve got basically the same sort of story again tomorrow – sunshine and showers.”

“there is a chance of some thundery showers across North West England and then that might pop up again over The Wash, North Midlands, that sort of thing.

“Anywhere from North Wales northwards, you could see some cumulonimbus developing and that could bring thundery showers anywhere that happened.”

In some places, as much as 15mm of rain will fall with the worst affected places getting up to 20mm.

Richard added: “Where you’re getting the 20mm that will feel quite heavy rain.”

Travel disruption could also spell trouble for some commuters this weekend, with Saturday being the better day to drive.

The Met Office’s Alex Deakin said: “Another set of weather fronts bring more rain on Sunday.

“Saturday, if you’re travelling, looks like a largely dry day with just a few showers around, fairly blustery and staying fairly mild.”

The rains come as bookies slashed the odds on it being the wettest December on record.

Ladbrokes have cut odds from 8/1 to just 3/1 on this being the wettest December ever.

Meanwhile, it’s just a 1/4 shot on any part of the UK seeing snow on Christmas Day.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “Punters dreaming of a White Christmas may well get their wish, but not before seeing potentially record-breaking rainfall.”

Helen Roberts from the Met Office told the Sun Online the flooding is due to a lot of recent rainfall, which means the ground hasn’t had a chance to dry.

She added: “We are seeing lots of surface water, which has caused extreme driving issues.”

It comes just as 19 million motorists are expected to be making their way across the country to be with friends and family for the festive season.

As well as weather conundrums, there will be 229 miles of roadworks and rail works for travellers to battle with too.

Those travelling on some of the country’s main roads and rail networks could face delays on Friday December 21.

Schools breaking up on Friday, December 21 – the closest end-of-term date to Christmas since 2012 – will trigger the most congested getaway rush for years, the RAC said.

“Frantic Friday” will see 19 million vehicles jam roads, the AA said, as commuters clash with school pick-ups and getaway traffic.
