Columbia Pictures
With the end of the year around the corner, and some of us getting to that age where we’re just to damn lazy to put in the effort go get cleaned up, brave traffic and crowds, just to ring in the New Year somewhere fun, might we suggest something less insane and 5x the fun?
How about we stay in, watch these NYE movies (or ones that mention the holiday) and drink ourselves stupid. Then at midnight, kiss your S/O or the porcelain goddess and start off 2019 with a hangover.
And just as a warning, this list deliberately omits 2011’s New Years Eve, because no good can come from watching that movie at any time.
TriStar Pictures
Sleepless in Seattle (1989)
This is a bittersweet mention of the holiday. At one point, Tom Hanks dreams of talking to his late wife on NYE, telling her how much he misses her. But it all works out okay – a few months later, on Valentine’s Day, he finds love with Meg Ryan.
Universal Pictures
About a Boy (2002)
This random rom-com takes place on NYE and is actually a pretty sweet story about growing into responsibly and finding love.
Buena Vista Pictures
While You Were Sleeping (1995)
This film might start off on Christmas Day, but has it’s peak on New Years Eve, when the comatose Peter wakes up. Thankfully Sandra Bullock realizes which brother she truly loves, and everyone has a happy ending.
CBS Television
Happy New Year, Charlie Brown! (1986)
We all celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas with the Peanuts gang, so why not ring in the new year with them too? Sadly, Charlie Brown doesn’t get a break in this one either. Poor kid.
Columbia Pictures
When Harry Met Sally (1989)
This vintage romcom has the two friends falling in love and declaring said love on New Years at a party. It’s actually one of the most touching moments of the 80’s/90’s. Try not to cry.
Paramount Pictures
Trading Places (1983)
I always have a huge laugh at this scene, with Eddie Murphy as an exchange student from Cameroon. Beef jerky is how I want to celebrate my new year too!
United Artists
The Gold Rush (1925)
This movie is incredibly memorable for this scene where the Tramp is stood up for NYE dinner. So he imagines a dinner party where he does an impressive dance with dinner rolls and forks. There’s a lot said in that scene without a single word.
Paramount Pictures
The Godfather: Part II (1974)
This is the least romantic or positive NYE’s kiss in history, when Michael gives his brother Fredo the kiss of death and tells him he broke his heart. Brutal.
Columbia Pictures
Ghostbusters 2 (1989)
I can’t pick the best part; when the Ghostbusters use slime to animate the Statue of Liberty, or when the public outside sings “Auld Lang Syne” to weaken Vigo and help out the ‘busters. It’s a New Year’s classic.
Paramount Pictures
Holiday Inn (1942)
This musical highlights all the best of the holidays throughout the year, including the first recording of “White Christmas” and their opening night performance on NYE.
Warner Bros.
Ocean’s Eleven (1960)
The original Rat Pack film actually took place on New Years Eve, and show’s off what a cool start to a new year looks like.
20th Century Fox
The Poseidon Adventure (1972)
Nothing says NYE like an aging cruise ship that’s capsized and taking on water.
United Artists
The Apartment (1960)
This is easily one of the greatest films of all time, and involves an office drone, who allows his bosses to conduct extramarital affairs in his Upper West side apt. But the ending, with the iconic game of Gin Rummy on NYE is easily one of the best scenes in cinema.
Miramax Films
Four Rooms (1995)
This anthology film finds a bellman named Ted, dealing with insane shit in his hotel on NYE and includes cameos from Quentin Tarantino, Bruce Willis and Antonio Banderas.
Warner Bros.
The Shining (1980)
There’s some debate over whether or not the ghostly parties that Jack runs into are NYE parties, or July 4th. Either way, a party with the man in the dog suit is something I’d very much like to attend to ring in the new year.

Hayden Panettiere
Size: 8
Age: 18
Height: 5ft 1in
Weight: 8st
To achieve her kick-ass figure, Hayden – who plays cheerleader Claire Bennet in Heroes – follows the ‘quartering’ rule. She eats only a quarter of the food on her plate, then waits 20 minutes before deciding whether she needs to eat again.
Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”
Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”
kim cattrall
Size: 10-12
Age: 52
Height: 5ft 8in
Weight: 9st 4lb
SATC star Kim swears by gym sessions with Russian kettle bells (traditional cast-iron weights) and the South Beach Diet to give her the body she wants. To avoid overeating, Kim has a radical diet trick – squirting lemon juice on her leftovers – so she won’t carry on picking.
Kim says: “I am no super-thin Hollywood actress. I am built for men who like women to look like women.”
