THE Severn Bridge was forced to close earlier today after a man climbed one of its towers to fly a drone.
Police were called to the M48 carriageway which runs through the Severn Crossing after a man was seen scaling a 446ft high tower on the bridge this morning.
The unnamed man, believed to be in his 20s, was arrested at the scene.
All lanes of the M48 carriageway were forced to shut in both directions between J1, Aust, and J2, Chepstow for around 30 minutes as police dealt with the matter.
Police have confirmed that all lanes are now open again, but traffic remains heavy in the area.
A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: “Officers attended the M48 Severn Bridge at 8.10am this morning after concerns were raised for a man who appeared to have climbed one of the towers and was flying a drone off it.
“The man, aged in his 20s, came down from the tower voluntarily and has since been arrested for causing a public nuisance.”
The Severn Bridge, which has recently scrapped its tolls, is used by 25 million vehicles a year and is the primary crossing point between Wales and England, and spans the River Severn just north of Bristol.
This morning’s incident comes just ten days after air traffic at Gatwick airport was heavily disrupted due to a drone flying over the runway for more than 36 hours.

A top police officer has now admitted that the drone sightings over the country’s second busiest airport have have been police units.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Chief Constable of Sussex Police Giles York confirmed that officers have not yet found the drone involved and did not know its model.
Mr York said: “Of course, we will have launched our own Sussex Police drones at the time with a view to investigate, with a view to engage, with a view to survey the area looking for the drone, so there could be some level of confusion there.”
Mr York also confirmed that military technology had been installed at Gatwick following last week’s incident, “dramatically” improving security at the airport.
However, he said he could not rule out future disruption of the same kind.
