Sarah Ferguson has revealed how she 'murdered herself' with self-hatred following her divorce to Prince Andrew. 

Fergie, 58, explained how she blamed herself for her split with the Duke of York in 1996, following ten years of marriage.

However, she says that her and Andrew's life together is now 'the greatest ever', branding it as 'our fairy tale'.

The Duchess of York also described how she's 'starting my life at 58', after returning to the royal fold earlier this year.

Describing her divorce to Modern Hero's Julia Fisher Farbman, Fergie said: 'It was rock bottom. I had completely and utterly destroyed myself. I murdered myself.

'I must have brought that on for myself, hadn't I? That's how I felt about myself, self-hatred at its height. I think that I lived in my ego for a very long time.'

She described how long periods of separation between her and Andrew, when he was away with the Navy, played a factor in their split. 

'It was seven years, 40 days a year, I saw him. It was really, really difficult,' she said.

'It played into my abandonment. We both agreed we didn't fight hard enough to keep it together.'

Despite the pain she endured following their divorce, Fergie still insisted that marrying Andrew in 1986 as 'certainly the best thing I've ever done'.

The mother-of-two also explained how she's now happier than ever, commenting: 'I'm starting my life at 58.'

However, she admitted it had been 'long, hard' journey, describing how it had taken 'loads of spiritual work to break through my ego', and adding 'I realise it's all about forgiveness'. 

Fergie continued that she and Andrew, who live together at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, are happier than ever.

The Duchess (pictured with Eugenie and Beatrice in 2015) also described herself as the 'mother that I've always wanted', after her own mother Susan Barrantes eloped to Argentina when she was just a child 

'Now our life together is the greatest ever,' she said. 'It's so hard to comprehend because we're not normal. This is our fairy tale, and we're telling it our way.' 

Speaking about her relationship with daughters Beatrice and Eugenie, Fergie said: '100%, I am a mother that I've always wanted.'

She added: 'Beatrice calls me the most misunderstood woman in the world.'     

Fergie's own mother Susan Barrantes caused a stir after eloping to Argentina with a professional polo player when the Duchess was just a child.

The Duchess recently about her divorce with Andrew in an exclusive interview with the Mail last month. 

'We’re the happiest divorced couple in the world. We’re divorced to each other, not from each other,' she explained.

We are completely compatible. Our bywords are communication, compromise and compassion.

‘July 23, 1986 was the happiest day of my life. Andrew is the best man I know. What he does for Britain is incredible; no one knows how hard he works for his country.'
