ENGLAND hopefuls Phil Foden and Reiss Nelson faced off in a thrilling Champions League clash at the Etihad.
Manchester City midfielder Foden, 18, and Hoffenheim’s on-loan Arsenal striker Nelson, 19, both had their moments as Pep Guardiola‘s men stormed back to win the group finale 2-1.
Here, SunSport assesses who was the top teen on a night that meant so much to both men for different reasons.
Foden is hoping for a more regular City place in the new year, whilst Nelson wants to prove he can be a frontline Gunner next season.
PHIL FODEN
YOU know what they say about the best things coming to those who wait – and for 76 minutes we waited.
Then, with one flash of his talented left boot, Phil Foden showed what all the fuss is about.
A deep cross, drifting beyond the far post, and he couldn’t have met it more sweetly.
Just a pity keeper Oliver Baumann stuck up an arm and tipped his volley over the top.
Goal-wise it clearly wasn’t meant to be, as another rocket from the edge of the box whistled narrowly over, while a first half header wasn’t quite as close to the target.
To be honest Foden – City’s poster boy, with a six-year deal freshly signed – had a torrid time of it in that opening 45 minutes.
Maybe he was just trying too hard in only his third start of the season.
But he certainly settled down after the break and was one of their best performers.
It clearly isn’t all hype with this kid….
REISS NELSON
FOR all Foden has been the poster boy of City’s rookies, there are plenty who rate 19-year-old Nelson as an ever better prospect.
Certainly he has made a substantially bigger impact this season, with an impressive six goals in 15 games for the Germans – just four of them from the start, too.
Arsenal fans hoping for a glimpse of their on-loan 19-year-old had to wait until the second half, when he appeared in an right sided attacking role.
Nelson’s movement was good, he was a constant outlet for his midfielders and fellow strikers, and he wasn’t afraid to take people on, as sub Fabian Delph discovered.
And when he got sight of goal he wasn’t afraid to have a pop either, as he showed when drifting beyond Alex Zinchenko and drilling a low shot which pulled a save from Ederson.

Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”
Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”
