NEW mums and dads will be able to carry their baby’s medical records on their phone under new maternity plans.
A digitised version of the personal child health record, known as a Red Book, will be available to all parents for easier access in case of an emergency.
Medical professionals will issue the online version that includes a child’s weight, height, vaccinations and other medical information. Details will be logged at every health and development review until the child is two.
It is part of a new maternity package to help save 4,000 lives. Ministers hope initiatives to improve safety will halve stillbirths, maternal and infant deaths, and brain injuries in newborns by 2025.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock has called for a major redesign of neonatal services, which will be boosted by an increase in staff numbers.
Expert nurses and specialists will be on hand to help vulnerable women from pregnancy to after giving birth. Plans for critically ill babies include improved accommodation and extra support from 2021, with more intensive care cots. A major review will also be held to boost breast-feeding rates.

Mr Hancock said: “Every parent will remember the Red Book that comes from the NHS with each baby. In this digital age we need to keep pace with the times. So from birth each child will now be able to start life using the best of modern technology in a way that’s easier for parents and fit for the future.
“I want our NHS to be the best place in world to give birth.”
He added: “We will take steps to ensure every expectant mother is supported — from pregnancy to birth to those critical first months of parenthood.”
