New photo Netflix announcement that 45M accounts have watched 'Bird Box' is met with widespread skepticism

Netflix's psychological horror flick 'Bird Box' has been watched by a record-breaking 45 million accounts in the week since it was released - but that number may not be as impressive as it seems.

'Took off my blindfold this morning to discover that 45,037,125 Netflix accounts have already watched 'Bird Box' — best first 7 days ever for a Netflix film!' the company wrote in a tweet Friday featuring a GIF of lead actress Sandra Bullock saying: 'Oh my god' as she pulls off her blindfold.

The announcement is one of the first times Netflix has publicly shared viewership metrics, splitting from its tradition of keeping numbers under wraps.

However, the remarkably high figure comes with a number of asterisks given the data's lack of context, as many on social media were quick to point out.

Podcast producer Jeremy Wein replied to Netflix's tweet saying: 'Seeing as you guys don’t release viewing figures via any identifiable way for a third party to verify, I’m like 110% sure this is a lie to hype up a film that critics slammed, that and you folks using bots to post memes, it’s all very disturbing.'

Another Twitter user under the handle @Go_Soundtracks wrote: 'This is such an empty claim from @Netflix. There is no way to know whether this is true. While they hide their numbers, there is no reason to believe how well their programs are being viewed.'

Hollywood Reporter writer Rebecca Keegan tweeted: 'I’m interested what a metric like this means for a filmmaker. Does ['Bird Box' director] Susanne Bier’s agent use this data as leverage on her next film? How does a traditional studio considering her for a project view it?'

'Bird Box' has been a popular topic on social media since its release on December 21 - with most conversations centering around the cliffhanger ending - don't worry, no spoilers here - and praise for Bullock's performance.

The Oscar-winning actress plays a mother of two children struggling to navigate a world overrun with monsters who can kill you just by being seen - hence the blindfolds.

The movie was met with lukewarm reviews from critics, leading many on social media to question the validity of Netflix's announcement.

Twitter user Ronnie Moore wrote: 'I'm curious how long the average watch time was... I made it about 45 minutes. I love SB, but I thought the movie was horrible. I can't' help but wonder how many fake social media accounts had to be created to get all the "amazing" reviews...'

Replying to the Netflix tweet, Laurent Hasson wrote: 'What??? 45M accounts, which means likely more people... if this had been a movie, at $10/ticket on average, are you telling me this film would have perhaps made $400-500M in its first week? I am having a hard time putting a relative value on Netflix views vs. Box-office dollars.'

Many users speculated that the actual number of viewers was likely much higher than 45 million given that most people share Netflix accounts with friends and family.

The common thread through most of the Twitter replies was clear: that the Netflix metric is of little value without context.

Earlier this month, Netflix released equally-vague year-end lists ranking programs by how users watched them - omitting information about the actual number of viewers.

The Kissing Booth was the service's most rewatched movie of 2018 followed by To All the Boys I've Loved Before and Roxanne Roxanne.
