New photo Krakatoa eruption – At least 43 dead after 65ft tsunami batters Indonesian coast following volcanic explosion

A 65ft tsunami sparked by the infamous volcano Krakatoa erupting has killed at least 43 people in Indonesia this morning.

A further 584 people have been injured after the enormous sea swell smashed into beaches around the Sunda Strait.

Officials said the possible cause of the tsunami were undersea landslides after Krakatoa exploded – sending molten lava and ash spewing more than 500 yards into the air.

The Sunda Strait – between the islands of Java and Sumatra – connects the Java Sea to the Indian Ocean.

A spokesman for the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) said areas have been levelled – and warned the death toll is likely to rise.

Among the destroyed buildings were at least 430 houses and nine hotels – while 10 ships were also wrecked.

TV footage showed roads blocked by debris from damaged houses, overturned cars and fallen trees.

The water washed away an outdoor stage where a local rock band was performing – killing at least one musician while others were missing.

A survivor told how he was taking pictures of a volcano on Saturday night when he suddenly saw a huge wave hurtling towards him.

Authorities warned residents and tourists in coastal areas around the Sunda Strait to stay away from beaches and a high-tide warning remained in place through till Dec. 25.

Rahmat Triyono, head of the meteorological agency, said: “Please do not be around the beaches around the Sunda Strait. Those who have evacuated, please do not return yet.”

Australian PM Scott Morrison said his country stood ready to help in the relief effort.

He said: “As always, we’re always available to support the Indonesian government with these things.”

It comes almost 14 years to the day since the Boxing Day 2004 tsunami killed 226,000 people in 13 countries, including more than 120,000 in Indonesia.

That apocalyptic disaster was caused by a huge earthquake under the Indian Ocean.

Norwegian tourist Oystein Lund Andersen told the BBC: “I was on the beach. I was alone, my family were sleeping in a room.

“I was trying to photograph the erupting Krakatoa volcano.

“Earlier in the evening, there was quite heavy eruption activity.

“But just prior to the waves hitting the beach, there was no activity at all. It was just dark out there.

“And suddenly I saw this wave coming, and I had to run.

“There were two waves. The first wave wasn’t that strong – I could run from it.

“I ran straight to the hotel, where my wife and my son were sleeping.

“And I woke them up… and I heard a bigger wave coming. I looked out of the window when the second wave hit. It was much bigger.

“The wave passed the hotel. Cars were pushed off the road.

“We and other people at the hotel went straight to the forest (on higher ground) next to the hotel. And we’re still up on the hill now.”

Anderson said that authorities believe the tsunami was caused by the volcanic eruption that he was photographing.

He wrote on Facebook: “So encountered my first tsunami it seems, hopefully my last.”

Endan Permana, head of the disaster mitigation agency in Pandeglang, told Metro TV police were providing assistance to victims in the tourist area of Tanjung Lesung in Banten province.

She warned: “Many are missing”.

Dramatic TV footage showed the seconds when waves hit a concert at an event for state utility company PLN – washing away the stage where local rock band Seventeen was performing.

In a statement, the band said: “The water washed away the stage which was located very close to the sea.

“The water rose and dragged away everyone at the location.

“We have lost loved ones, including our bassist and manager… and others are missing.”

The disaster mitigation agency said it was still compiling information on the disaster and there was a “possibility that data on the victims and damage will increase”.

A spokesman said the tsunami was caused by “an undersea landslide resulting from volcanic activity on Anak Krakatau”.

It was made all the more powerful by abnormally high tide because of the current full moon.

The day the earth shook: The 1883 eruption of Krakatoa

IN August 1883, the world experienced what experts believe was the strongest and most violent eruption in recorded history.

The explosion of Krakatoa sent tsunamis with waves up to 135ft across the ocean – killing more than 30,000 people.

Thousands more were suffocated by hot ash raining from the sky.

The eruptions were equivalent to 200 megatons of TNT – about 13,000 times the nuclear yield of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.

They were also heard thousands of miles away – and are believed to be the loudest noises ever experienced in human history.

World temperatures dropped by more than 1C the following year due to the ash clouds in the atmosphere blocking the sun.

The island that Krakatoa stood on virtually disappeared.

The Krakatoa eruption of 1883 caused one of the worst natural disasters in history.

It sent smoke high into the atmosphere which was seen around the world.

The explosion, which happened at 10am on 26 August, was the loudest sound in recorded history.

By the end of that day, three-quarters of the island had vanished and 40,000 people were dead.

In 1927 a volcanic new island emerged called Anak Krakatau – or Child of Krakatoa.

In September, more than 2,500 people were killed by a quake and tsunami that hit the city of Palu on the island of Sulawesi, which is just east of Borneo.

The tsunami crashed onto the shoreline as thousands had gathered for a beach festival.
