A JUDGE blasted the “scandalous waste” of almost £200,000 spent funding an anarchist protester’s hopeless bid for a police payout.
Squatter Jed Miller, 26, claimed he was assaulted and branded a “t**t” while being arrested at a Guy Fawkes Night demo outside Parliament in 2012.
Judge Alan Saggerson threw out the case, funded by legal aid — and branded it “utterly meritless”.
He said: “I don’t know how many nurses’ salaries can be paid with an equivalent amount. Even if he had been successful, his damages are most unlikely to have exceeded £10,000.”
Miller is now liable for the Met’s legal bills, but the judge said the force is unlikely to get anything as his ability to pay is probably “non-existent”.
He put the legal aid bill at more than £90,000. With the police costs, the total for taxpayers to cover comes to almost £200,000.
A three-day jury trial at Central London county court heard Miller was among protesters on the Anonymous group’s Million Mask March. He described it as an “evening out”.
He added: “I was saying goodbye to my friends and the next thing I knew six police officers grabbed me.”
He was held for 15 hours and charged with assault, but prosecutors dropped the case in March 2013.
He sued for assault, false imprisonment and malicious prosecution.

The court heard officers say they had genuinely believed he had pushed a policeman twice. He had also tried to incite the crowd by shouting “charge”, they claimed.
Judge Saggerson said it would be “utterly ludicrous” to suggest that any police action other than arrest was appropriate.
