HUNDREDS of vulnerable women and children are at risk this Christmas because of delays to new domestic violence laws.
Theresa May vowed to “put an end to this abhorrent crime for good” in her 2017 election manifesto.

But anti-abuse campaigners are furious after the long-promised crackdown was hit by fresh delays.
They fear it will spell misery for victims over the next few weeks when domestic violence is more likely to be fuelled by festive booze.
Home Secretary Sajid Javid has clashed with Downing Street officials over the delay amid fears they are too bogged down with Brexit to do anything else.
A public consultation on the plans closed more than seven months ago – and now MPs have been told there will be no further action until at least the New Year.

Labour MP and domestic violence campaigner Jess Phillips told The Sun on Sunday: “The delays are yet another example of a government failing to deal with serious issues affecting its country.
“Every week women are being murdered, beaten and abused. And every week women and children are still being treated badly in our family courts.
“It is time for the government to stop talking and act. Every week of delay is another week where the government lets down these people.”
Two women are killed by a current or former partner every week, according to government figures. A further 10,000 are sexually assaulted by a violent partner.

The PM promised action last March to tackle the scourge of violence in the home as a matter of urgency.
She vowed that those who beat up a partner in front of the kids would face longer jail terms.
Controlling husbands who use “economic abuse” – withholding finances or denying access to a car – would become an offence for the first time.
Mrs May announced £19 million of extra funding for womens refuges last June in response to The Sun on Sunday’s Save our Shelters campaign.
But MPs fear that since then the crackdown has slipped down the government’s agenda.

One minister told The Sun on Sunday: “Some of us have grown concerned that there has been little or nothing heard about this important issue for a long time.
“Brexit seems to have taken over the whole of our attention span and there is little bandwidth for anything else.
“We need to get some progress behind this Bill now. Delays are just piling on the misery for those who suffer the dire consequences of domestic violence.
“It’s not just lack of action. Nobody seems to want to talk about it. We need action to know when this is going to happen.”

The government insisted that Bill would be published “soon” in the New Year.
A spokesman said: “Domestic abuse is a devastating crime that shatters lives and this Government is determined to transform the response in order to prevent abuse, support victims and their children, and pursue perpetrators.
“We remain absolutely committed to publishing our draft landmark Domestic Abuse Bill and have already begun the recruitment process for an independent Designate Domestic Abuse Commissioner, who will be responsible for monitoring the provision of domestic abuse services and providing national leadership on domestic abuse issues.”
