ROCKSTAR may be busy with Red Dead Online, but that doesn’t mean it’s giving up on the money-making machine that is GTA Online quite yet.
Today it is launching an update that features seven new modes as part of an entirely new career. Arena War also brings a host of customisable and violent new vehicle types.
GTA Online is the multiplayer portion of GTA V, and sees players across the fictional world of Los Santos try and build up businesses — both above board and not — and wreak havoc.
In Arena War, “ruthless gladiatorial combat meets the bleeding-edge of vehicular modification technology in one spectacular – and highly combustible – competition”, according to Rockstar.
A teaser picture for the update shows a motorbike armed with miniguns, a sports car that seems to have anti-aircraft cannon, and a big rig armed with machine guns, which gives you something of an idea of the level of Mad Max style silliness to expect when the update drops later on.
GTA V is the most profitable entertainment product of all time, with revenues around £5 billion, with up to £1 billion of that coming from GTA Online.
Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two recently took legal action against two players it accused of selling cheats for the game.
Take-Two said at the time that it was going to continue using the courts to block those who created “disruptions” in GTA’s online world.
Meanwhile, Red Dead Online has only been available for everyone for a week or so, and is still very much in a testing phase, with economy rebalancing and other tweaks on the way.
Red Dead Redemption 2 had the biggest opening weekend in entertainment history off the back of a truly excellent single-player mode.
