New photo Food is all-important at Christmas, so here’s how to eat well for less — plus win £15,000 in our raffle

WHAT’S my favourite thing about this time of year? Definitely the food.

All those nibbles, pub lunches with work, turkey and trimmings . . . and that’s before we get to pudding.

Today we put together the cream of the Christmas crop for desserts and sweet treats, so you can round off your family’s special meal in truly indulgent style.

Mince pies. A Christmas must. Stick with traditional Deep Filled Mince Pies from Sainsbury’s, £1, or opt for something different like Aldi’s Salted Caramel Mince Pies, £1.99. Alternatively, get two desserts in one with Black Forest Mince Pie Crumbles from Morrisons, £2.

Christmas pudding. You mean you haven’t been maturing a homemade pud for the few months? Me neither. Tesco has plenty of good options, including its Classic Christmas Pudding, two for £3. Or treat yourself with Asda’s Extra Special Luxury Christmas Pudding, £1.50.

Yule log. This festive treat has had a few makeovers in recent years. Asda does a Baileys Chocolate Yule Log, £5.

Raise the roof with Santa’s Rooftop Chocolate & Caramel Yule Log from Marks & Spencer, £15. Or keep it simple and classic with Morrisons’ The Best Belgian Chocolate Yule Log, £6.

Bitesize treats. If you like a variety of sweet treats, head to Asda for its 50-piece dessert platter, £4.

Or try Iceland’s 64-Piece Dessert Platter, £5. You can pick up Morrisons’ The Best Christmas Chocolate & Orange Mini Trees, £6. Feeling creative? Pick up Iceland’s Decorate Your Own Reindeer Macarons, £3.

Showstoppers. The big supermarkets have got some spectacular finishers this year. Pile it high with Aldi’s Croquembouche Patisserie Kit, £4.99. Or smash your way to dessert heaven with the White Christmas Snow Globe pudding from The Co-op, £10.

SUN SAVERS ARE LIFE SAVERS

TENS of thousands of pounds has poured in to our Christmas appeal this week alone – including £16,000 from big-hearted Sun Savers members.

And just yesterday a single anonymous individual gave an incredible £10,000.

A second £10,000 donation was given by News UK, the parent company of The Sun.

Every penny from our Light Up Christmas appeal will go to the charity Bliss, which helps to save the lives of premature or poorly newborns.

The Sun Savers bonanza came from members of our rewards club who have kindly chosen to donate cash they have saved from the free fivers we give them for every 28 papers they buy. It could not go to a better cause.

Up to 8,000 babies will spend this Christmas on a neonatal intensive care unit, and no one knows what their parents will go through better than Charlotte and Chris Gell, who are both 28.

Their twin girls Darcy and Scarlett were born six weeks early in April 2016 and were so ill they had to be whisked straight to intensive care.

It was a terrifying time for the parents, from Northallerton, North Yorks, and they credit Bliss with helping them cope.

Cookery teacher Charlotte said: “It was a lifeline to have a point of contact with a volunteer from Bliss. Being separated from your babies is a very traumatic experience.

“To have someone checking on us every day was just what we needed.”

One of the many things that Bliss do is to train “Champion volunteers” to provide cot-side emotional support to families — and they will be on hand right over Christmas.

Little Darcy and Scarlett are now happy and well and looking forward to a big Christmas Day.

Charlotte said: “They are hilarious, full of character, they keep me absolutely run off my feet. They’re just perfect.”

Hayden Panettiere
Size: 8
Age: 18
Height: 5ft 1in
Weight: 8st

To achieve her kick-ass figure, Hayden – who plays cheerleader Claire Bennet in Heroes – follows the ‘quartering’ rule. She eats only a quarter of the food on her plate, then waits 20 minutes before deciding whether she needs to eat again.

Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”

Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”

SATC star Kim swears by gym sessions with Russian kettle bells (traditional cast-iron weights) and the South Beach Diet to give her the body she wants. To avoid overeating, Kim has a radical diet trick – squirting lemon juice on her leftovers – so she won’t carry on picking.

Kim says: “I am no super-thin Hollywood actress. I am built for men who like women to look like women.”
