BRITISH Airways passengers heading for London were left stranded in the US for three days and forced to sleep on the airport floor after issues with their plane.

The Gatwick-bound flight 2036 should have left Orlando on Thursday evening but the plane was grounded in Florida for 24 hours due to mechanical issues.

Customers are understood to have been given a hotel in Florida for the night before attempting to fly again on Friday evening.

But passengers said the plane didn’t get far when it began dumping fuel mid-air and lowering the landing gear at high altitude and diverted to JFK in New York.

This time there was no offer of accommodation for the majority of the 200 passengers and they were left to sleep on the hard floor beside their suitcases.

Passenger Barry Laing told NBC 4: “Tempers are starting to fray slightly.

“I don’t think BA have been very good, especially when it comes to young children, families with babies.

“There’s been a real lack of communication. We’ve had no food, refreshments or water.”

Daisy May Dixon, 14, told the New York Post: “I was quite scared.”

Angry tweets poured on Twitter as customers demanded to know what was going on.

One woman posted a picture of her children sleeping on the floor and said: “Deplorable service.

“Cannot believe our children had to sleep on the floor of an airport terminal for five and a half hours whilst you advise that you are looking after us.”

Another said: “Imagine having a little daughter spending their birthday in a terminal, sat on a rock hard floor and not knowing when they’re going to eat, sleep or have a safe place to stay.

“Put yourself in the footsteps of that family and think about what you are doing.”

One angry passenger wrote: “#BA2036 still sat here no apologies. Air stewardess walking around laughing my children having to sleep on a cold stone floor. No food on flights.

“Utter utter disgrace. Thanks BA for ruining the holiday of a life time #BAdontcare #ijustwanttogohome”.

BA said the plane had to be diverted “as a precaution, following a minor technical issue” and apologised to customers.

In a statement, the airline said: “We are sorry to our customers for the delay to their travel plans.

“Our ground teams are looking after customers and arranging hotel accommodations and we are sending a relief aircraft out to New York to get customers to London as quickly as possible.

“The safety of our customers and crew is always our priority.”

Passengers are believed to have been put on a new aircraft late on Saturday night and expected to arrive in London on Sunday.
