New photo Dating experts reveal nine ways to spot a lie in a text message from changing the subject to using compliments

MODERN dating is a minefield and it can be hard to know where you stand sometimes.

Communication is key, which seems to be made even harder by social media.

Using emojis and memes can be quite cryptic and hard to read.

But even with just plain text messages can be vague and misleading.

With more and more people messaging their loved ones electronically here’s how to spot a lie – even over text.

Oversharing

One thing to look out for is excessive and unnecessary details.

Your partner may fill a message with meaningless details in a bid to bamboozle you.

If you ask a short question but get an essay in response, this can be another evasive move.

Dating expert Louanne Ward told Femail that there are two types of oversharing, adding in details which aren’t relevant, and adding in minute detail to make a story more plausible.

Compliments

Everyone loves receiving compliments, right? Wrong.

Louanne said you should also be wary of your date if they’re sending you sweet nothings.

Obviously, it doesn’t mean your partner is hiding something every time they tell you that they love you.

But watch out for a compliment being tacked on to the end of a message to try and flatter you.

Louanne gives an example, saying: “I’m not sure what time I am finishing up.

“My last client is a real talker but much rather be spending my day with you as you always make me happy.”

Vague or evasive

Another red flag to watch out for is when your partner is being unusually vague.

Brit +co says suddenly changing their style to be evasive may indicate something isn’t right – or they’re hiding something

Changing the subject

This is a classic decoy move and not just over text.

A diversion is also used in texts to try to throw someone off the scent and Brit+co says you should watch out for sudden changes in subject.

They said: “An abrupt change of topic can indicate they are hiding something.”

Delays

The dreaded ‘typing’, or three dots, it can feel like an eternity waiting for someone’s reply.

But this can be another sign of a lie, according to Brightside.

Unless they always send long passages, you may want to view receiving an essay with caution.

Aside from being annoying, it can indicate they’re writing a well-thought out statement

Brightside said: “He or she might be correcting their message to make it more convincing.”

Ignoring you

Something we may all be guilty of time to time, if we suddenly get distracted or have to run for a train but just leaving a conversation can indicate something shifty.

It’s likely that when they resume the chat, they will also change the subject, thereby dodging the question.

Brightside say: “Concealment is a type of lie.

“It is way easier to skip the answer while texting. Or a person can just go offline.

“In another case, a person may just change the topic and return to the previous conversation, hoping that nobody notices the absence of a direct answer.”

Qualifying words

While they may think this adds credibility to their statement, using phrases such as ‘to be honest’, ‘as far as I remember’ can indicate a lie.

Lifehacker says there are two keys phrases which people use when they’re being shifty – so watch out.

Personal pronouns

It’s something you may not even notice but removing these key words can signal something’s amiss.

Lifehacker says: “Watch for when a writer omits personal pronouns from a story.”

They include ‘I’ and ‘we’, and can be another red flag in a message if they’re not there.
