"Many Photos" - Strictly's Tess Daly left heartbroken after running over and killing her family dog called Minnie

Tess Daly accidentally ran over and killed her family's pet dog and has been left 'beyond heartbroken'. 

The Strictly Come Dancing presenter ran over her family's Maltese Shih Tzu called Minnie after builders left the door of her £3.5million Buckinghamshire mansion open, allowing the dog to escape. 

Ms Daly told the Sun on Sunday: 'I'm devastated by this terrible accident.

'It's a dog owner's worst nightmare.

'It has had a huge effect on the whole family and we are heartbroken at losing Minnie.'

Ms Daly, who has another dog - chihuahua Blue - didn't realise that Minnie had managed to escape into the path of her car until it was too late

She hadn't realised that Minnie had managed to get out of the house and only realised when it was too late.

The family had been due to go on holiday to the Maldives to celebrate Ms Daly's 50th birthday on April 27.

They considered postponing the holiday but instead decided to go on with it in an attempt to cheer up the two daughters. 

A source told the Sun: 'Tess is absolutely beyond heartbroken.

'She and Vernon have drummed it into the girls that they must never, ever let the dogs out and sure enough, the animals always stayed indoors.'

It is believed that the mourning family held a memorial for the dog in the grounds of their mansion's gardens before they buried her.
