MANCHESTER CITY have been told they must pay a Premier League-record £110million to land Wolves star Ruben Neves, according to reports.

Pep Guardiola’s side will have to fork out around £20m more than neighbours Manchester United paid for a then world-record Paul Pogba in 2016.

The Etihad side are in the market for a new midfielder after two of their summer targets joined other clubs, say the Sunday Times.

Fred went to United and Jorginho joined old boss Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea.

City are said to retain a strong interest in 21-year-old Portuguese sensation Neves, who Nuno Espirito Santo’s side paid around £14m for in July last year.

Wolves, owned by Chinese investors, are said to have rebuffed two approaches for Neves during the summer.

 

And he agreed a new five-year contract just two months ago on improved financial terms.

Guardiola’s Abu Dhabi masters want him to retain the Premier League this year and win the Champions League.

To do that, the former Barcelona man believes he needs Neves to share the No 6 role with the ageing Fernandinho.

The 33-year-old Brazilian made 48 appearances for City last season and fresh legs in the rapid City midfield would be a welcome addition.

Wolves have a long-term plan to follow the City path to success.

And a source told the Times: “They [Wolves] don’t want to sell so the price required to convince them will be huge.”
