Police hunting a road rage driver who shot dead a 10-year-old girl in Arizona have released a sketch of the gunman.

The shooting that killed Summerbell Brown and injured her father Dharquintium Brown occurred Wednesday night in Phoenix.

The suspect is a man in his 30s or 40s with a short beard, who was wearing a dark baseball cap during the shooting.  

He followed the family car home in his white Ford F-150 pickup truck and fired several gunshots when they pulled into their driveway.

Two other family members, the girl's mother and sister, weren't injured following the shooting around 5:45 p.m.

The pickup drove away and no immediate arrest was made.

Sgt. Vince Lewis of Phoenix Police said the fact that the pickup was closely following the victims' vehicle might indicate there'd been a traffic dispute. 

He said there was no immediate indication that the family and the shooter knew each other.

A statement from police said the family were driving home when they 'noticed a white Ford F-150 4-door pick-up truck following them very closely'.

When pulled onto their driveway the driver is said to have opened fire.  

'It's possible that this was a road rage that started earlier in the area prior to the victim's family arriving at home,' Lewis told KTAR.

He added: 'Driving is a stressful situation that requires all of your attention, so if you do encounter an aggressive driver, we’re asking that you call Phoenix Police.'

A GoFundMe has been set up for little Summer following her tragic death. 

KTVK-TV reported that the 30-year-old father, whose name was not released, told the station outside the family home Thursday morning that the shooting occurred after he got out of the car to confront the man who was following his car.

Police had said immediately after the shooting that the father also was critically wounded but then said Thursday morning he was recovering. 

The man told a KTVK reporter that he wasn't badly injured.

Police said the shooter was believed to be a man 30 to 40 years old and driving a white pickup with a dark trim on the bottom.
