New photo Fabregas would never give ‘quiet’ Hazard captaincy – and Chelsea star agrees

EDEN HAZARD has responded to Cesc Fabregas’ captaincy claim about him by admitting he does his talking on the pitch.

The Spaniard had revealed he would “never give Hazard the armband” because of his off-field demeanour, but on it is a different matter.

Hazard – who surpassed a century of goals for the Blues on with his winning brace against Watford – is closing in on his best goalscoring season at Stamford Bridge.

The Chelsea ace was set a target of 35 goals by boss Maurizio Sarri earlier in the campaign and he took his Premier League tally to 10 goals and nine assists on Boxing Day.

It had been rumoured that Sarri was considering making Hazard captain to tempt him into staying but his teammate Fabregas believes the winger shouldn’t be given the armband.

“With Eden, one thing I can say is that outside of the pitch, if I was a coach, I would never give him the armband,” Fabregas told the Chelsea website.

Fabregas added: “He is very quiet, he doesn’t talk or get involved in many things.

“But on the pitch, I could give him the armband. He is a leader: he always wants the ball, he always wants to make things happen.

“Yes, sometimes it doesn’t come off, this is the Premier League, a tough league, but he always tries. For every team he plays for, Belgium or Chelsea, he is a very important player.”

Despite wearing the armband for Belgium, Hazard responded in agreement with the former Arsenal star, even admitting his surprise at getting the captaincy for his national team.

“I understand what Cesc is saying,” Hazard told the Blues website. “I think exactly the same.

“Now I am the captain of Belgium, but for me it was strange because I know off the pitch I am not a leader.

“When I am on the pitch, in a different way to John Terry or Vincent Kompany for Belgium, for sure I am a leader.

“I want the ball when we are in a bit of trouble so I can try to help. On the pitch, I enjoy that responsibility a lot. When the team needs me, I try to do my best.

After his man-of-the-match performance against the Hornets, Hazard mentioned his desire to match long-serving devotees such as John Terry and Frank Lampard.

Yet later, Hazard revealed he has no intention of discussing a new deal before the summer — when he will have just 12 months left on his current agreement.

A £300,000-a-week deal has been on the table for over a year but Hazard is refusing to commit with links to Real Madrid ever-present.
