TWO Border Force boats have been redeployed from the Med to patrol the Channel for migrants, Sajid Javid has revealed.

The Home Secretary’s announcement came as twelve more suspected migrants including a 10-year-old child were detained after landing on a Kent beach this morning.

The cutters will be redeployed from overseas after almost 100 migrants made the perilous Channel crossing in dinghies and other small craft over the Christmas period.

Mr Javid flew back from a safari getaway in South Africa where he had planned to spend New Year with his wife Laura and their four children.

He has been holding a series of meetings with British officials to discuss how to stop migrants risking their lives by travelling across the Channel in flimsy boats.

But as he arrived in the country, a group of suspected migrants from Iran in a black dinghy were picked up by the Border Force in Lydd-on-Sea.

A police spokesman said: “Officers attended to assist Border Force who are dealing with the incident.”

Eyewitness Christ Matcham said: “I was driving towards New Romney this morning with my sister when a police car came haring past us along the road.

“We then saw the police car and van on the sea side of the road a bit further down. We saw what we suspected were immigrants standing by the van on the pavement.”

Susan Pilcher, 47, added: “Border Force were emptying the boat, there were clothes and petrol cans inside, the boat was tiny, like something you would take out snorkelling.

“It seems incredibly small for 12 people. It’s frightening knowing people will risk going through that shipping lane on something so basic.”

Dover MP Charlie Elphicke said the new incident is “deeply concerning” and called for drastic action to stop the influx.

He added: “Underlines the need for our cutters to return from the Med to form a modern Dover Patrol and to work with the French to help people found in these unseaworthy boats back to France.”

Dozens of desperate would-be refugees have been caught landing on the south coast of England after crossing from France in recent days.

Yesterday Mr Javid spoke to his French counterpart Christophe Castaner to agree a shared approach to ending the crisis.

But the Home Secretary was blasted by Tory MPs after he failed to commit more patrol boats to the Channel.

There is currently only one cutter deployed in the water between Britain and France, with two smaller vessels supporting it.

Tim Loughton raged: “Frankly he needs to show a much greater sense of urgency. These journeys are being made now and clearly we do not have enough assets in the Channel to head them off.

“If the Navy can provide that additional resource now, it needs to be brought in.”

Mr Javid insisted there were “no easy answers” to the crisis which flared up over the Christmas period.

He wrote in a newspaper article: “The reasons behind the increased crossings are complicated and in many cases outside of our control.”

Officials have warned that using a dinghy to make the 21-mile crossing is as dangerous as running across the M25 motorway.
