New photo Our top New Year’s Day hangover cures from paracetamol to pickles

TRYING to fix a New Year hang-over and be expensive, what with the blowout meal and various medications.

One recent survey revealed it is the Geordies who spend the most trying to put themselves out of their misery — on average £44.88. So if you are feeling a bit below par today, here are some tips for affordable remedies . . .

The Hangover starring Zach Galifianakis showed just how bad the morning after can be

  • Cut-price carb-loading: Sticking to good old- fashioned fast food to beat that “urgh!” feeling? Head to Topcashback.com where new customers can order a takeaway pizza from Domino’s and get around three per cent cashback. Got a recent receipt from McDonald’s? It will have a code that you can use to fill in online feedback, usually resulting in a voucher for a £1.99 Big Mac, as opposed to the usual £4.29.

  • Bargain bubbles: A bottle of Lucozade is my go-to and I know some of you swear by it, too. But a bottle these days can set you back £1. One is never enough for me, but at Tesco you can get six 380ml bottles of orange Lucozade for just £2, which works out as just 33p a bottle — instead of at Asda, where you will pay £3.70.

  • In a pickle: Some people swear by a dose of gherkin brine as the ultimate hangover cure, with a quick shot of it in the morning said to banish that fuzzy feeling. Just the thought of it makes me shudder — but if you want to give it a try, head to Asda to find their own pickled gherkins for just 79p, instead of leading brand Melis at £2.97.
    SAVE: £2.18

  • Switch ’n’ save: Leading-brand medicine is often the no different from a super- market or pharmacy’s own range, except for the price — just check the list of ingredients on the back of the box to compare. Pick up 16 paracetemol tablets for just 35p at Tesco (the cheapest I’ve found) instead of £1.65 for 16 Panadol tablets.
    SAVE: £1.30

  • Prices correct at time of going to press.

To achieve her kick-ass figure, Hayden – who plays cheerleader Claire Bennet in Heroes – follows the ‘quartering’ rule. She eats only a quarter of the food on her plate, then waits 20 minutes before deciding whether she needs to eat again.

Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”

Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”

SATC star Kim swears by gym sessions with Russian kettle bells (traditional cast-iron weights) and the South Beach Diet to give her the body she wants. To avoid overeating, Kim has a radical diet trick – squirting lemon juice on her leftovers – so she won’t carry on picking.

Kim says: “I am no super-thin Hollywood actress. I am built for men who like women to look like women.”
