The main characters in television and film get the plotlines that audiences are supposed to follow the most closely. The biggest and brightest roles go to the actors with the most screen time. Except that some supporting characters are more well-liked than the leads. The characters in these tv shows and movies did such a brilliant job that they stole the show.
Hit-Girl, Kick-Ass
Hit-Girl was, well, a hit. Chloe Grace Moretz drew the attention of audiences with her badass slicing and dicing of bad guys. It can be hard to earn your stripes as a young female hero, but Hit-Girl handles the job with the grace of a ninja and the class of bad-mouthed sailor.
Ron Swanson, Parks and Recreation
Ron Swanson started off as a minor character on the show. His deep-seated disdain for the government, love of weapons and ability to eat ten pounds of breakfast food made him a hit. After the first season producers realized that Ron Swanson was going to be a staple character and gave him a bigger role.
Dr. King Schultz, Django Unchained
It’s not unusual for Christoph Waltz to create truly amazing, standout performances no matter how big or small his role. Dr. Schultz perfectly balances morality and crude wit. R.I.P. to the best, and probably only, dentist-turned-bounty-hunter in film.
Ben Linus, Lost
Anyone who watched ‘Lost’ from the very beginning knows it was hard to tell what the hell was around every corner. Ben Linus played the chilling villain who was on the island all along. Originally, Michael Emerson was only supposed to appear in three episodes. Fans were so taken with the peculiar evil character that Ben Linus stayed through the whole series.
Fonzie, Happy Days
Nobody can think of ‘Happy Days’ without thinking of ‘The Fonz.’ The supporting character is hardly seen in the first season, but turned into a pop culture icon with his double thumbs up and ‘ayy’ catchphrase. During later seasons the producers actually wanted to change the name of the show to ‘Fonzi’s Happy Days.’
Quicksilver, X-Men: Days of Future Past
The young, rash and impatient Quicksilver we see in this ‘X-Men’ is arguably the version that fans love the most. The bounty-less kid steals so often that he can’t keep track of what’s actually his. He’s pretty hilarious and goes down as one of the movie’s most memorable characters.
Arya Stark, Game of Thrones
Fans of the book series already knew that Arya is a badass, but it was up to Maisie Williams to deliver her character on the show. From her demeanor to the way she handles the shit that life throws at her, Arya Stark is one of the most loved GOT characters. Playing such an intense role as a young actress proves that this girl has a long career ahead of her.
Riddick, Pitch Black
The 2000 sci-fi film turned into a franchise surrounding the character played by Vin Diesel. However, the first movie was originally an ensemble cast. It’s hard to imagine that the series could’ve continued without Riddick, and that’s why the fan favorite became the center of the story.
Daryl Dixon, The Walking Dead
Daryl’s character wasn’t in the graphic novels upon which the show is based, but over time Norman Reedus became a fan favorite. He’s rough around the edges in the best ways possible and delivers some poetic redneck lines. Daryl tends to outshine some of the show’s uptight leads.
Natasha Romanoff, Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Talk about brains and beauty. Scarlett Johansson pretty much steals scenes from the men anytime she appears in a Marvel movie. Black Widow is an incredibly effective agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and consistently showcases her instinct in intelligent and sexy ways.
Jeffrey Goines, 12 Monkeys
This wildly psychotic character won Brad Pitt a Best Supporting Oscar nomination. Many were pondering how the tv adaptation of ’12 Monkeys’ would compare to Pitt’s performance, but turning the character into Jennifer Goines had a favorable outcome.
Sergeant Dignam, The Departed
With an abrasive yet loyal demeanor, the mildly unpleasant staff sergeant resonated with fans. The insulting Boston character played by Mark Wahlberg outshone big guns including Matt Damon, Alec Baldwin and Jack Nicholson. Damon received a ‘Best Supporting Oscar’ nomination for the role.
The Wolf, Pulp Fiction
Winston Wolfe, played by Harvey Keitel, is a’ fixer’ character who always manages to stay calm, cool and collected no matter what kind of shitstorm is ensuing. He has a cynical sense of humor that is understated in the most tasteful way.
Crazy Eyes, Orange Is The New Black
One of the most intriguing and wild women in the series, this character has captured and kept the attention of fans. It’s everything from her unexpected outbursts to her impeccably insane deliveries that make Susan Warren the perfect criminal. Audiences are always wondering what she’s thinking behind those truly crazy eyes.
Phil Coulson, The Avengers
Phil Coulson is a quiet favorite from many of the movies in the Marvel universe. His calm demeanor paired with his perfect deadpan deliveries created a supporting character that stuck out. His death ultimately gave the Avengers the push they needed to come together and handle the Chitauri invasion. We’re grateful he was brought back to life to carry agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Pete and Debby, Knocked Up
There are a million reasons why ‘Knocked Up’ is a hoot, but the blurbs we see of perpetually irritated married couple Pete and Debbie have us cracking up. Director Judd Apatow also saw the hilarious chemistry and went on to create ‘This is 40’ with Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann playing Pete and Debbie in the same universe.
Cosmo Kramer, Seinfeld
There are a lot of supporting roles that made the show great, but it was the ‘hipster doofus’ across the hall that resonated with fans. Over the course of the show Kramer gets more and more screen time, as producers realized how loved he was. In fact, Kramer is only missing from two episodes in the entire series.
The Jesus, The Big Lebowski
This character surprisingly only appearing in two scenes. Perfectly played by John Turturro, the role goes down as one of the most memorable supporting characters created by the Coen Brothers.
Chloe O’Brian, 24
Although she wasn’t on until the second season, it’s hard to imagine ’24’ without Chloe. Her unconventional attitude and willingness to do anything (and often unauthorized) for Jack Bauer made her very likable. Chloe appears in 137 episodes, which is the most of any actor in the show next to Kiefer Sutherland.
Aldous Snow, Forgetting Sarah Marshall
As the new boyfriend of Sarah Marshall, the British pop star/hippie douchebag left audiences wanting more. The combination of cringe-y and hysterical made for a captivating character, and thus the spinoff ‘‘Get Him to the Greek’ was created.
Fenster, The Usual Suspects
Benicio Del Toro, the genius bastard, purposely delivered his lines in an accent that was almost impossible to understand. It was this clever choice that left the wonderful oddity Fenster as such a memorable character.
Jesse Pinkman, Breaking Bad
It’s hard to imagine Walter White without his reckless young counterpart. Believe it or not, show creator Vince Gilligan planned on killing Jesse Pinkman off during the first season finale. Aaron Paul played an iconic character that contributed to the show’s successful five seasons and won an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor.
Trent, Swingers
It was this Indie hit that truly put Vince Vaughn on the map. The actor easily made a skirt-chasing alcoholic into a character that audiences loved. It was his ‘screw it’ demeanor and ability to effortlessly live in the moment that made Trent one of the most entertaining to follow.
Blake, Glengarry Glen Ross
This is Alec Baldwin’s only scene in the entire film, but that’s all he needed to leave a mark. While Blake wasn’t in the original play, it’s hard to think of ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ without relating it to this intense character and his big speech.
Dwight Schrute, The Office
‘The Office’ is full of wonderful characters that will have you laughing until you cry. Dwight K. Schrute is his own brand of hilarity. Not only does Dwight have an intensely comical work ethic, Rainn Wilson portrays a strange personality that has fans consistently cracking up at the weird shit he does.
Here’s to all of the characters that stuck with us, even though they were supposed to stick to the background.
