BRITAIN will be lashed by heavy rain today before thunder rolls in over the weekend, forecasters have warned.
The Met Office has issued a severe ‘Yellow’ warning for rain in South Wales this morning, saying the downpours could spark travel chaos.
The warning covers the southern coast of Wales from Swansea to St Davids, with forecasters alerting commuters to possible delays on roads and railways.
The locally heavy rain across Wales and southwest England will spread to all areas – except Scotland where it should remain bright with isolated showers.
Despite the downpours, there will still be highs of 21C in Cardiff, Birmingham and Exeter today.
On Saturday afternoon, the Met Office warned there may be thundery shows, particularly across northeast England and eastern Scotland.
But it looks as though the weather may start brightening up by Sunday, as forecasters say it will be dry and warm across England and Wales.
There could still be some rain and wind in the northwest.
Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon said the weekend’s weather will be “hit and miss” due to a band of rain moving in from the south-west.
He said: “That will still be clearing eastwards through Saturday morning, particularly along the eastern coast.
“In its wake there will be periods of brightness but there is a mixture of heavy, potentially thundery showers as well.

Mr Claydon added: “In the sunshine it could feel quite pleasant, with temperatures potentially up to 24C (75.2F) but there are those heavy, potentially thundery showers across the UK that people may see.”
Early autumn is shaping up to be a warm one, as forecasters predict it to be even hotter than last year’s ‘Indian Summer’ when temperatures hit 26C, making it the hottest October for seven years.
