"Many Photos" - Tui flight makes emergency landing after passenger spits in his wife's face after arguing

An enraged airline passenger who spat in his wife's face and forced to captain to make an emergency landing has been fined more than £5,000.

Edward Mongan, 42, got into a furious row with his wife while flying over the Atlantic Ocean.

But after cabin crew tried to warn him over his use of strong language towards his other half, he launched into another tirade against the attendants.

The pilot of the flight going from the UK to Mexico was so worried about the situation, that he made an emergency landing on the island of Bermuda.

Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe told the court in Ber­­muda: 'One can only imagine what was going through the passengers' minds while this was happening.'

 It is not known how the fight was started, but Mongan was heard to swear at his wife on a TUI Airways jet last Sunday.

The court heard that when cabin manager Anne Marie Evans spoke to him about his language he told her: 'F*** off. Get out of my sight.'

Prosecutors said Mongan then went to the back of the plane and shouted at another crew member and pushed a member of crew.

'What I did was uncalled for. I'll never do it again...' he told the court according to the Daily Mirror.

'My wife is in Mexico. I just want to see my wife and kids.'

Magistrates at the court in the capital Hamilton fined Mongan £5,250.

TUI said the plane continued to Cancun soon after the diversion.
