"Many Photos" - Snooty MPs build gate in public underpass — barring homeless from Commons entrance

SNOOTY MPs have built a wooden gate in a public underpass – to stop rough sleepers thronging outside their Commons entrance.

But it has sparked a bitter row with a homeless people’s charity accusing them of erecting “barriers” while talking about action to solve the problem.

The 4ft high obstacle has been erected near the spot where a homeless man died last year – sparking a public outpouring.

MPs and peers left flowers and messages of sympathy at the time – but since then some staff have complained about beggars approaching them as they turn up for work.

Others have complained the area is full of litter and often “stinks” as they arrive each morning.

But the gate – which can only be activated by a Parliamentary pass – has led to accusations of hypocrisy and sparked a bitter row among MPs.

One admitted: “I feel rather uncomfortable that we are putting up barriers so soon after the public outpouring last year.

‘THIS SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN’

“Inside the palace where we work, there is a lot of talk about helping the homeless yet it might appear to some we are unable to face it on our own doorstep.

“It’s clearly not a security issue as there are armed police everywhere and anyone could leap over or kick down the gate.

“It’s clearly just there to keep beggars at a distance.”

Greg Beales, campaigns chief from the homelessness charity Shelter, said: “When homelessness has risen so dramatically in the last decade, we desperately need politicians and the government to take urgent action.

“Not with barriers but by providing the support and assistance we know can help people to access a safe and stable home.

“That’s why our new PM needs to have his eyes open to the housing emergency and put renewed energy into building social homes – so that no one has to resort to sleeping on the streets in the first place.”

Parliamentary authorities installed the gate at almost the exact spot where a 35-year-old rough sleeper died.

Flowers were left at the scene by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn with a note reading: “This should never have happened. As a country we must stop walking by.”

It later emerged that the homeless man was a migrant sex offender from Portugal.

The government has pledged to halve rough sleeping by 2022 and eliminate it altogether by 2027.

A spokesman for the Houses of Parliament said: “We are in the process of transferring ownership of the area to Parliament and have installed a pass activated gate to manage the area better for those entering the Estate.”
