TV MOGUL Simon Cowell has thrown his weight behind a society lottery campaign designed to keep thousands of charities open.
The group, including the Health Lottery, is demanding the jackpot for society lotteries be raised to £1million per draw and a removal of a “ten per cent” rule that means high-prize payouts are impossible because they are linked to ticket sales.
The rule is preventing the Society Lotteries from raising more money for thousands of charities.
Lotteries such as Herts & Essex Air Ambulance, Samaritans, MacMillan and Diabetes UK and The Health Lottery and 500 other Society Lotteries are among those restricted this way.
One charity supported by the Health Lottery, the Asian Resource Centre of Croydon, is in danger of closing down as a result.
Mr Cowell, who visited the charity and its head Ima Miah, said: “I had the privilege of meeting Ima earlier this year and her commitment to helping those that need help really touched me.

“Her words speak louder than mine and anything that can help improve her charity and thousands of others in a similar situation, would be much appreciated.”
The Health Lottery’s Martin Ellice added: “The Government needs to act now to avoid damaging local grass root charities and causing thousands to close.”
“To give a jackpot of £500,000 a Society Lottery would have to sell £5million worth of tickets in a single draw. This is impossible and unachievable,” Ellice explained.
