I LIKE big boots and I cannot lie. Yep, I said boots. That wasn’t a typo.
I like a family car to have a big rear end because, well, space and practicality should be number one on the agenda.
Styling, fancy tech and “bloke points” down the golf club are all well and good, but all of that is useless if the car can’t swallow a bellyfull of gear when the kids want to go to Center Parcs. Skoda knows this.
Skoda is the brand that rebuilt its reputation by making very sensible cars, and making them very well.
The new Skoda Superb continues this tradition with the largest boot in its class – a bulging 625 litres – which is one hell of a selling point for a £25,000 saloon with VW underpinnings.
The theme of roominess and space continues throughout – there’s bundles of storage in the cabin and it’s more than comfortable enough for five people.
Those familiar with the Superb might be squinting to see what’s different about this new version.
It’s only a facelift, so changes are subtle. The grille now feeds into the headlights and there’s a lick of chrome added to the interior. Big whoop.
There are some more meaningful additions though, mainly in the form of tech. Full LED headlights are an option for the first time, and a predictive cruise control system will help ease long journeys.
There are six engines in total – three of them are diesel because most Superb sales are still found in the fleet market.

The entry 120hp diesel will probably bore the pants off you, but Skoda has keener drivers covered with a 268hp petrol. And there’s everything in between.
It’s refreshing to drive an honest, no-nonsense family car which does exactly what it says it will. The superb Skoda Superb.
