"Many Photos" - MP calls for seagulls to be given CONTRACEPTIVES after Gizmo the Chihuahua was snatched and beach goers attacked

AN MP has called for seagulls to be given CONTRACEPTIVES after one of the birds plucked Gizmo the Chihuahua from a garden in Devon.

Backbencher John Woodcock said Brexit could help Britain deal with the gull menace once and for all – by obliterating red tape that bans taking action against the birds.

Rebecca Hill is desperate to get her beloved chihuahua Gizmo back

He said: “The seagull issue has been a menace for years. Putting contraceptives in food has been effective in some areas.

“An alternative is replacing their eggs with fakes.

“Let local communities take action against the fat, aggressive urban sods that dive bomb us, crap on our cars, steal food out of our hands and terrorise our pets.”

It is currently illegal to damage gull nests as all seven gull breeds are subject to “conservative concern.”

The intervention comes just days after four-year-old Chihuahua Gizmo was snatched by a huge gull from a back garden in Paignton, Devon.

Owner Rebecca Hill said: “My partner Ashley was hanging the washing out when Gizmo went out on Sunday lunchtime to go to the toilet. He would normally just lie in his bed.

“And it all happened so quickly, one minute he was in the garden and then there was a yelp and Ashley saw him being carried off by the seagull.

“I love animals but these birds are real pests and can cause real damage, but this time of year the seagulls are looking for food for their young and obviously saw Gizmo as an easy picking.”

Yesterday we told how a gull pecked its way into student Matt Cotton’s Torquay flat before “going psycho” and attacking him as he tried to get it out of his bedroom.

In Cardiff, a city with around 3,000 breeding pairs, postmen warned they might not be able to deliver the mail over fear of attacks.

And last month, pensioners Roy and Brenda Pickup were trapped in their own home for six days as gulls nesting above their front door attacked them every time they left.

Roy, 77, from Knott End, near Morecambe Bay, Lancs, needed hospital treatment for cuts to the back of his head after the birds swooped to protect their young.

Last night he told The Sun: “I don’t think it’s going to be long before a child is seriously injured or an elderly person falls trying to get away from a seagull and bangs their head, which could be fatal.”
