"Many Photos" - Matterhorn is cracking due to climate change in the Alps, experts warn

ONE of the world’s best-known mountains is cracking due to climate change, say scientists.

The 14,700ft Matterhorn is becoming more dangerous to climb as parts of the surface break off and cause landslides.

It is caused by receding ice and melting permafrost on the Alpine peak, say researchers at Zurich’s ETH university.

Expert Jan Beutel said: “When the high mountains thaw in summer, stiffness decreases and the ground sediments get soggy and wobbly. Cracks expand and move.

“At some point it’s too much and a small scale of the surface breaks off.”

Peaks guide Rob Collister says rock falls all over the Alps are “worse and worse” and he no longer takes clients there.
